A new era begins for wheelchair basketball in Victoria, with the official launch of the Victoria Wonders, representing the state in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL). This milestone marks a major step forward in the development of elite women’s wheelchair basketball in Victoria.
Managed by Wheelchair Basketball Australia, the WNWBL is the premier platform for the country’s top athletes, and the addition of a Victorian team strengthens national competition while opening more opportunities for emerging talent.
Basketball Victoria is thrilled to support the Victoria Wonders as they make their highly anticipated debut in the 2025 season.
“This team is a natural and strategic step in the performance pathway for Victorian athletes,” said a spokesperson for Basketball Victoria. “It reflects our commitment to creating more competitive avenues for women in the sport and empowering athletes to reach their full potential.”
The formation of the Victoria Wonders would not have been possible without the tireless work of Shelley Matheson and Leanne Del Toso, whose leadership and dedication have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.
Head Coach Jeremy Synot shared his excitement about the team’s debut:
“We're really excited about the group we've selected this season. We have a good mix of experienced athletes, including multiple Paralympic Medallists who will be complimented by new emerging wheelchair basketballers looking to make their mark in the competition. That balance is crucial — and the real challenge this season is blending the experience with the youth to continue to progress and improve. Together, they're creating a competitive and united environment that we believe will deliver results.”
The Victoria Wonders will host their first home game on Friday, 30th May, against the Adelaide Thunder, kicking off Round 1 of the 2025 WNWBL season at the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South.
