Melbourne, VICTORIA – The Victorian Wheelchair Basketball League returned to court in Bendigo last Saturday for a successful opening round, with six teams coming together to launch the 2026 season.
Geelong and Kilsyth both finished the day undefeated, while Frankston and Diamond Valley each picked up a win. Alongside the results, there were encouraging signs across the competition as players took on leadership roles and teams built confidence together.
Nathan Graetz led the scoring for Diamond Valley, helping the Eagles secure a win over Western Melbourne before taking on the reigning champions later in the day. Diamond Valley also gave all 12 athletes valuable time on court across its two games.
Harriet Caldwell helped lead Bendigo, while Georgie Gott guided Western Melbourne through its opening matches. Although both teams are still chasing their first win, the round gave them plenty to take into training, with Western Melbourne gaining valuable experience against Diamond Valley and Geelong.
Basketball Victoria’s Diversity and Inclusion Officer Wheelchair Basketball, Elliott Knight, said it was an encouraging start to the season.
“It was great to have all six teams together and see everyone enjoying being back on court,” Knight said.
“We saw experienced players supporting their teammates and newer players growing in confidence. There’s so much effort from players, coaches and volunteers behind each team, and they should be proud of the way they started the season.”
The opening game of Round 2 will bring the two undefeated teams together, with Geelong taking on Kilsyth at 10am at Beyond Bank Stadium, Geelong, this Saturday, 19 September.
Frankston and Diamond Valley will look to build on their opening wins, while Bendigo and Western Melbourne will be eager to get their first victories on the board.
With an unbeaten start on the line and teams settling into the season, Saturday promises another great day of wheelchair basketball. Get down to Beyond Bank Stadium, Geelong, to support the players and enjoy the action.
