Round 6 of the 2024 Championship Women saw some teams continue their strong campaigns, bounce back on the winners list, whilst some underdog teams caused upsets.
Wyndham (102) def Camberwell (66)
Wyndham’s first half set up a comprehensive victory, collecting their seventh win against Camberwell. With Wyndham taking the first quarter, 30-17, Wyndham took control of the second quarter, 31-16 and last quarter, 22-11.
Leading scorers for Wyndham were Amanda Paschal with 35 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists. Julie Brosseau finished with 13 points and Jasmine Goodman with 10 points. Lauren Jones had an influential impact off the bench, finishing the game with 15 points and Janice Pearce with 11 points.
Emily Whitehouse led the way for the Dragons, with 24 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block. Gemma Fyffe finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist.
Warrnambool (65) def Hume City (57)
Warrnambool continued their strong campaign in season 2024, defeating the Broncos by 8 points. After a tightly contested first quarter, the Mermaids won the second quarter, 15-13 and third quarter, 24-14.
Dakota Crichton finished as the top scorer for the Mermaids, with 29 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals, shooting at 50% from the field and 59% t from two-point range. Matilda Sewell with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Mia Mills finished with 12 points and Julia Nielacna with 11 points.
Alex McKellar, the top scorer for the Broncos, with 17 points, 3 rebounds and 1 block, while Tashia Overby, 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist and 1 block.
Bulleen (93) def Sherbrooke (52)
Bulleen led all night from start to finish against the Sherbrooke Suns. A strong display on the offence and defensive end saw Bulleen shoot 47% from two-point range, 40-11 points from bench, 18-6 points from turnovers.
Charlotte Vincent-Lord was on song from three-point range shooting at 57%, finishing with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block. Keli Romas, 15 points and Catelyn Van Es with 11 points.
Sarae Beveridge was instrumental off the bench, 16 points and 2 rebounds.
Alicia Carline top scored for the Suns, finishing with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.
Bellarine (63) def Bulleen (57)
In a thrilling and entertaining match, the Bellarine Storm defeated the Bulleen Boomers by 6 points.
With the Storm taking the advantage at quarter time, the Boomers won the second quarter, 21-19.
The Storm went on a 17-4 run during the third quarter. Whilst the Boomers won the last quarter, 18-12, the Storm held on to seal the victory.
The Storm won the points from turnovers, 17-12.
Bridgette Rettstatt top scored for the Storm, 19 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Courtney Strait, 17 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists, whilst Olivia Virt finished with 10 points.
Maxine Allen and Sarae Beveridge finished as the top scorers for the Boomers, both with 10 points.
McKinnon (77) def Camberwell (62)
The Cougars secured their second win of the season, defeating the Dragons by 15 points.
With the Dragons taking a 2 point lead at quarter time, the Cougars went on a 9-2 scoring run in the second quarter, winning the quarter 18-7.
Emily Suckling had a great game top scoring for the Cougars, finishing with 22 points, 3 assists and 1 steal. Emily Maltezos also had a great impact, 12 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals
Emily Whitehouse and Eleni Valos were excellent for the Dragons, finishing with 18 and 16 points respectively.
Sunbury (80) def Pakenham (62)
The Sunbury Jets secured their third win of the season, defeating Pakenham by 18 points.
Whilst the Warriors won the second quarter, 20-18, and last quarter, 17-16, the Jets won the third quarter, 22-14.
The Jets shot the ball well from two-point range, shooting at 46%, 11-6 run in the second quarter and 42-32 points in the paint.
Chloe Hildebrand was excellent, and top scored for the Jets, 18 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists. Veronika Mirkovic, 16 points and Abby Hildebrand, 12 points.
Bree Whatman and Haille Nickerson top scored for the Warriors, finishing with 13 and 10 points respectively.
Eyes now turn to Round 7. With each game bringing new challenges and opportunities, the excitement of the Championship Women's season only continues to grow.
