Melbourne, VICTORIA – Primary schools can now bring the energy, excitement and accessibility of 3x3 basketball to their students through a new Sporting Schools basketball package.
Previously available only to secondary schools, the 3x3 offering has been expanded to primary schools and is recommended for students in Grades 5 and 6.
Inclusive and easy to play, 3x3 is a modified version of basketball played on a half court, with one hoop. Its simple format gives students more opportunities to get involved in the action, making it an ideal introduction to basketball, while helping students develop their skills, confidence and teamwork, as well as having fun with their classmates.
The new package gives primary schools another exciting way to choose basketball through Sporting Schools funding and create a positive experience that can encourage students to remain active beyond the school environment.
Basketball continues to be the number one sport delivered through Sporting Schools in Victorian secondary schools for the third consecutive year, leading the way in 2024, 2025 and across 2026 so far. It is also the number one sport delivered, in Victoria, in 2026, across both primary and secondary schools.
Basketball Victoria Participation Officer Linda Woods said the new package would make one of the state’s most popular school sports accessible to even more students.
“Basketball continues to connect with more Victorian students through Sporting Schools than any other sport, and we are incredibly proud to see that continue,” Woods said.
“The new primary school 3x3 package gives younger students the opportunity to experience a fun and inclusive modified version of the game, with a simple format that gives everyone the chance to get involved.
“Whether a student is picking up a basketball for the first time or already loves the game, this is a fantastic way for schools to build confidence, teamwork and positive connections through sport.”
Sporting Schools funding supports primary students and secondary students in Years 7 and 8 to participate in free, high-quality sport programs at school. The program has a particular focus on engaging students who are less active, girls and students attending schools in disadvantaged areas.
It also helps schools and teachers build the confidence and capability to deliver positive sporting experiences, while supporting coaches and the broader sport workforce.
With flexible formats, engaging sessions and opportunities for students of all experience levels, basketball is an easy and exciting choice for schools looking to make the most of their Sporting Schools funding.
The new primary school 3x3 package adds another way for students to discover the game, get moving and begin what could become a lifelong connection with basketball.
