As we look back on 2022, we want to celebrate what an incredible season it was. It was a competitive season across the board, we saw some exceptional performances from teams, players and coaches. But, in this article, we want to celebrate the unsung heroes of basketball. Yes, we want to recognise our Club Award winners for 2022.
Below we've listed our Chairman's, Club of the Year, and Lino Di Paola (Volunteer of the Year) Award winners:
Chairman's Award 2022 - Shepparton
The Shepparton Basketball Association have been named the winner of the 2022 Chairman’s Award in the Big V competition. The Chairman’s Award recognises outstanding performance and excellence in basketball operations and the Gators have set a new standard with their game-day presentation, sell-out crowds, halftime entertainment and staff development.
The Shepparton Basketball Association have always been known for their passionate fans and electrifying atmosphere and they have taken it to a new level in 2022. The team’s commitment to providing a high-quality game day experience paid off with sell-out crowds becoming a regular occurrence. The association’s efforts in staff development have also been a major factor in its success.
GSBA president, Peter Sutherland was elated with the news of this award.
“We would like to thank the Big V for recognising our Club, winning the President's Award. This is great recognition of the Club and the work of our tireless volunteers who have responded to the Shepparton community’s passion for the game of basketball. When good people come together great things happen. The GSBA and Gators are made up of very good positive people who deliver a sports entertainment experience for everyone….the opposing teams and their supporters, the sponsors, the umpires and our ever-growing crowds, it’s paramount that everyone is welcome and feels a part of this great game.” Peter said.
The Chairman's Award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved with the Shepparton Gators organisation. The Shepparton Gators are looking forward to building on their success and bringing even more excitement to their fans in the 2023 season. Club of the Year Award 2022 - Bellarine
The Bellarine Basketball Association has been named Big V Club of the Year for the 2022 season. The team was recognised for their strong on-court performance, efficient administration, and exceptional communication with Big V staff.
The award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Bellarine Basketball Association, who have consistently demonstrated excellence in various aspects of the club. Their efforts to improve crowd attendance numbers, both at home and away finals, have paid off, as have their efforts to enhance their social media presence.
Bellarine Operations Manager, Nick Stamatopoulos is honoured to have his club win the coveted award.
"Receiving the Big V Club of the Year award is truly an honour. It's a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved with the club, from the players and coaches to the support staff and supporters. Thank you for recognising our efforts and we will continue to strive for excellence in everything we do.” Nick said.
In addition, the team's efforts to develop and train score table officials and statisticians were also recognized, further emphasizing the all-around success of the club. Congratulations to the Bellarine Storm on their well-deserved recognition as Club of the Year for the 2022 season!
Lino Di Paola Award 2022 - Lesley Thomas
Lesley Thomas, a dedicated member of the Sunbury Basketball Association, has been named the Lino Di Paola Award winner for the Big V 2022 season as Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding contributions to the association. Throughout the year, Lesley was responsible for organizing all events, including the season launch, presentation night, and Jets raffle. She served as the point of contact for all foreign-born players, providing essential support with accommodation and other necessities. Lesley's dedication and selflessness earned her the nickname "Mum" from people around the association.
The Lino Di Paola Award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond to support their association's Big V program. Lesley's unwavering commitment and attention to detail have made her an invaluable asset to her association. Her tireless efforts have helped make the Sunbury Basketball Association a welcoming and inclusive community for all players.
Sunbury General Manager, Chris Tighe couldn’t be more proud of Lesley and her commitment to the club.
“Lesley is a founding member of the Sunbury Basketball Association and is currently our vice president. She Bleeds Blue and White. Lesley has been active in the Big V program here for several years, dedicating hours upon hours. This includes running the bar on game day welcoming players and assisting our imports to adjust to the Australian way of life. Her work in and around the club is invaluable and the Sunbury Basketball Association is proud to have her involved so heavily in the Big V space. Lesley upholds our club culture and is a worthy recipient of 2022 Big V Volunteer of the Year ” Chris said.
