Victoria, Melbourne - The Walking Basketball celebration day was held on 13 November brought 17 teams from 15 associations, including McKinnon, Waverley, Bass Coast, Eltham Wildcats, Blackburn, Frankston, Nunawading, Melbourne Central, Diamond Valley, Bendigo, Bulleen, Wyndham, Geelong and Darebin, to the State Basketball Centre (SBC) for a friendly round-robin tournament.
Every year the end of year celebration gets bigger, with more teams and associations involved. We had teams travel from regional areas including Bendigo and Coronet Bay, alongside 13 metropolitan associations, contributing to a vibrant and diverse event.
This year we introduced a Skills and Development session delivered by Blackburn Vikings coach, Melissa Rees. This session was designed for participants who preferred a non - competitive option but still wanted to be a part of the on - court action.
2025 also attracted new Walking Basketball rules that were launched by Basketball Australia, our referees adapted well, which helped to ensure every game was played with enthusiasm, fairness, and in great spirit.
Basketball Victoria Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Kathy Perry was delighted to see the passion and enthusiasm that participants brought to the day, “Celebration day was an absolute joy to watch. Our Seniors competed with enthusiasm, formed new friendships, and simply had fun, which is exactly what Walking Basketball is all about. Their energy and excitement proved that there’s no age limit when it comes to enjoying the game.”
Following the tournament, everyone came together for lunch in the SBC function room, enjoying the chance to reflect on the day, share stories, and discuss the future of Walking Basketball.
This tournament celebrates the seniors in our community who remain passionate about basketball, even if the fast paced version of the game is no longer suitable. It’s another example of Basketball Victoria’s ongoing commitment to inclusion and providing opportunities for all.
