Melbourne, Victoria- Basketball Victoria is excited to announce the launch of the Victorian Wheelchair Basketball League, created to bridge the gap between introductory clinics and a more competitive on court environment.
The league will provide an outlet for athletes who are already involved or would like to get involved in wheelchair basketball to access the next level of competition - helping players develop their skills, experience high-performance play, and take their sport to the next level.
"We know there’s a gap between participating in wheelchair clinics and competing at a high-performance level. This league changes that, providing an outlet for athletes to take their sport to the next level," said Elliott Knight, Basketball Victoria’s Diversity and Inclusion Officer – Wheelchair Basketball.
Inclusive and Accessible
The league will feature mixed male and female teams, creating more opportunities for all athletes to participate. While the competition will feature high-performance wheelchair basketball athletes, there is no minimum experience requirement to take part.
Competing associations will include:
- Frankston
- Kilsyth
- Wyndham
- Geelong
- Bendigo
- Diamond Valley
Kilsyth Basketball has long championed inclusive sport, and Competitions Manager Lynda Spicer is proud to see the league come to life, "It's taken a huge team effort to bring the league to fruition. Hosting a round allows our local community to see firsthand the passion, skill, and resilience of our athletes,” she said.
“We’re committed to providing a competitive, fun environment that supports every player to reach their potential.”
Approximately 60 skilled athletes with the amazing support of their associations, coaches, admin staff and volunteers will compete over a 5 week season culminating in a grand final event held at SBC. The launch of the VWBL will give these talented athletes the chance to represent their association alongside able bodied teams.
Athletes do not need to be currently affiliated with one of these associations to participate. Those without an existing club connection may be placed into a team based on participant numbers and/or classification.
