Basketball Victoria has selected the 2023 Under-16 State teams representing Victoria Country and Victoria Metropolitan.
These four teams will head to Warwick (Perth), WA on July 2-9, for the National Championships co-hosted by Basketball Australia and Warwick Basketball Association.
In 2022, our Victorian U16 Metro Men put on an outstanding performance all tournament and secured Gold in a 15 point win against Queensland South!
Our Country and Metro Women battled it out for Bronze with Metro winning in a nail-biting finish in the final seconds from a well executed inbound play. The U16 Country Men finished 6th overall after a competitive tournament.
With 2022 being the first full year since 2019 of un-interrupted preparation including the State Development Program, the VJBL and Junior Country Championships, Basketball Victoria’s General Manager of High Performance – Grant Wallace, said the regular calendar of play and preparation plus recent stellar performances at the East Coast Challenge, Southern Cross Challenge and Country Cup has determined a high calibre group of athletes to be selected from.
“We’ve had a jam-packed start to the high-performance program in 2023, it’s great that so many athletes have been pushing each other on the court to be their best.”
“After some tournament play, regular training in our State Development Program and the weekends combine we’ve seen a lot of talent, so after an extensive process it’s still a difficult task to finalise the teams.”
“Unfortunately we’ve had some injured athletes in recent times, but we know we have the depth, ability and competitiveness across all of our teams to make some noise in the finals and support everyone who takes part in the tournament.”
