Referees are the backbone of our game. Every match, at every level, depends on them, and they deserve the same respect and support as every player and coach on court.
In Victoria, more than 50% of our referees are under the age of 18, a statistic we’re proud of. These young people juggle school, training and games to keep thousands of matches running smoothly across the state.
That’s why Basketball Victoria created the Green Whistle initiative, to remind everyone in our community that many referees are still teenagers, learning and developing. It’s about fostering patience, empathy and respect from players, coaches and spectators.
Importantly, age doesn’t always reflect experience. Many young referees have already officiated lots of games at high levels, developed strong game awareness and shown impressive leadership. What matters most is their commitment to learning and their love of the game.
Unfortunately, negative comments or sideline behaviour can discourage young officials and affect their confidence ultimately influencing them to stop refereeing. The Green Whistle campaign reminds us that a supportive and respectful environment is essential for them to flourish and stay involved in basketball.
Under the initiative, referees under 18 wear a green whistle so they can be easily recognised as young people still developing their skills. This small but visible sign helps others remember to treat them with understanding and encouragement rather than criticism.
Referee coaches and supervisors are also on hand during games involving green whistle referees, offering guidance and feedback to help them build confidence and progress through the referee pathway. This support helps them grow in skill and ensures they feel valued as part of the basketball community.
Basketball Victoria continues to remind everyone that referees are crucial to keeping the game alive. Without them, matches simply wouldn’t happen. Showing respect and encouragement, especially to those wearing the green whistle, helps build a stronger, safer and more positive environment for everyone involved.
So next time you see a green whistle on the court, remember it’s not a sign of inexperience but of potential, commitment and the future of our sport. A small show of support can make a lasting impact.
