Melbourne, VICTORIA - Basketball Victoria is celebrating another proud achievement on the international stage after five Victorian athletes and Victorian assistant coach Zoe Carr played a key role in the Australian Sapphires' bronze medal success at the 2026 FIBA Under-17 Women's Basketball World Cup in Czechia.
The Sapphires defeated Canada in the bronze medal game to secure Australia's third medal in the history of the tournament and the nation's best result since also winning bronze in 2018.
Five of Australia's 12-player squad progressed through Basketball Victoria's High-Performance pathway, while Basketball Victoria High-Performance Coach – Country Women, Zoe Carr was part of the coaching staff that guided the team throughout the campaign. Standout Victorian Madi Ryan was also recognised among the tournament's elite, earning selection in the FIBA Under-17 Women's Basketball World Cup All-Star 5 First Team.
Basketball Victoria General Manager- Pathways Dom Linossier, said the success reflected the strength of Victoria's player development pathway and the dedication of everyone involved in helping athletes reach the international stage.
"To see so many Victorians contribute to a World Cup medal is a fantastic achievement and one our entire basketball community should be incredibly proud of," Linossier said.
"This group has worked exceptionally hard to earn this opportunity, and it's a credit not only to the athletes and coaches, but also to the clubs, associations, families and support staff who have helped them along the way. To also see Madi recognised among the tournament's best players is a wonderful achievement and a reflection of the talent coming through our pathway."
The tournament also showcased Victorian talent representing New Zealand, with Elisa Brown and Madelin Eliadis key contributors in their 5th place finish. Their selection further highlights the depth and quality of Victorian basketball, with athletes making an impact on the global stage for multiple nations.
