Another great weekend of Big V. Let's wrap up the weekend and review the standout games from each division. Have a read below:

Melbourne University 87 def. Camberwell 80
Camberwell will be kicking themselves after this loss after having the lead for the majority of the game, including a 10-point lead at 3-quarter time. The Dragons were led early by Jay Mackenzie who seemed to be everywhere and finished with 25 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Whilst neither team shot particularly well from the land of plenty, it was the offensive rebounding of Melbourne University that ultimately got them the win, recording a whopping 12 more offensive rebounds than the Dragons. The Black Angels did it by committee, with 6 players scoring double figures in points, led by star player Nicholas Masunda with 18 as they ran over the top of the Dragons in overtime.

McKinnon 76 def. Hume 74
What a fantastic display of Big V Basketball this game was! This game was an important one early in the season between two teams that were hoping to earn themselves the 3 and 3 record and initial head-to-head in the season series that could become very important by season end. It was McKinnon who took control for the majority of the game led by Morgan Riley and Briana Gray with 23 and 15 points respectively. Unfortunately for Hume, a big part of their downfall in this one was their inability to convert from behind the arc, shooting just 16% compared to the Cougar's 35%. A late charge from Hume would’ve put some panic in the Cougars camp but they were strong enough to protect their lead despite Jessica Azzopardi’s best efforts for the Broncos.

Chelsea 109 def. Collingwood 101
It was a shootout at Collingwood College on Saturday night as the All Stars hosted the visiting Chelsea Gulls. The Gulls had some serious offensive firepower across the night with Aaron Frost having 35 points at 61% to go with a whopping 21 rebounds. He was well supported by guards Elijah Davy with 30 points and young star Callum Guillot who contributed 21 and all of this was done very efficiently. The main differences in the team came from the efficiency from the 3-point line with Chelsea shooting at a very healthy 48% from deep whilst Collingwood were going at 31%, this elite figure from the Gulls brings into question the All Stars defence on the night and whether they had adjusted to the sharpshooting. For Collingwood, Jacob Daniels, Jorden Adnam and Sabiri Bailo were all fantastic offensively on the night but unfortunately could not get the job done in the end.

Melbourne University 77 def. Chelsea 69
An impressive third quarter by the Black Angels set up an important win against Chelsea to help get their season back on track. For the Black Angels the win was set up by the experienced duo of Amelia Smith and Maddison O’Nial, Smith finished just shy of a triple-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 9 assists. It was young star Meera Coburn who was exceptional off the bench with 17 points and 10 rebounds. If you had taken out the third quarter, there is a good chance you would’ve said that Chelsea were the better team on the night, unfortunately, it goes to show that you need to put 4 quarters together to secure the win in this very competitive division.

Altona 92 def. Melton 81
The Gators came storming home in the 4th quarter to secure a hard-fought win over the talented Melton side. It was a range of contributors in the 4th, that made it very difficult for the Thoroughbreds to slow down, with Anderson, Rocker and Georgiadis ticking the scoreboard over for the Gators. The big 3 for Melton were fantastic again, with Liam Allison having 19 points and 9 rebounds, Blake Allison with 15 points and 9 rebounds and Koby Skenderis also adding in 18 points, but they did not have enough support around them to be able to get them across the line.

Gippsland United 73 def. Coburg 68
Coburg almost created one of the biggest upsets across the Big V this season, leading the undefeated Gippsland United by a point at the final change. It was Joanna Watson who came up clutch late in the game, knocking in her crucial free throws late in the 4th to secure the win for Gippsland. For the Giants, it was pleasing to see a number of them step up in the absence of Emily Verey, with Brunato and Scott contributing 15 points each. They were led, however, by the usual suspect in Siobhan Mac Aodha who dropped in 19 points to go with her 3 assists and 3 steals. For Gippsland, they had a very equal range of contributions across the board with 4 players hitting double figures led by Joanna Watson who dropped 6 of 7 free throws, including the crucial ones down the stretch to secure the win for Gippsland United.

Melbourne 73 Def. Frankston 67
A competitive roller coaster of a game in VYC with the Tigers closing out the Blues over in Frankston on Sunday. In what was looking to be a Frankston W early after a 28-to-10-point first quarter, the Tigers came alive and pounced closing the margin with Kobe Shewry scoring 10 of Melbourne’s 21 in the 2nd quarter scoring from all over the floor. Unfortunately for the Blues, they struggled after the break scoring just 8 points allowing Melbourne back in the game tied at 53 leading into the 4th. The Blues got their first score from Jesse Lans’s with just under 7 minutes left making it hard to hold on as the experience of Melbourne’s core took over closing the game out to get up by 6. Even after winning the rebound game, Frankston’s 23 turnovers hurt along with Melbourne’s 15-second chance points. Melbourne’s ability to get up 15 more scoring opportunities added to their success.

Bendigo 72 Def. Ringwood 67
A game that never got a bigger lead than 7 points deems itself to be up for discussion and with good reason. Both Bendigo and Ringwood are plus .500 thus far this year with no signs of slowing down. With the biggest quarter-by-quarter split lead going to Bendigo by just 3 points, it would have been an intense game to watch and be a part of! Both teams had 4 players get in double figures with both Georgantas and Cox finishing with 19 points apiece. Seemingly it was Bendigo’s 62 rebounds, 24 of which were offensive leading to 15 second-chance points became a contributing factor to their win. The Braves also got to the line 21 times to Ringwood’s 10 showing they were just that bit more aggressive and willing to put their bodies on the line to win this battle now sitting just one spot above the Hawks on the Terril ladder.

Sherbrooke 75 Def. Camberwell 70
Two of the top sides coming up against one another is always going to be a game to review and these two groups delivered. Although neither team shot the ball exceptionally well, it was a hard-fought game that came down to the last 2 minutes of the 4th with Lachlan Earl hitting a game-tying 3pt to bring it to 70 apiece. With Jacob Bourke-Doggett fouling out with just under 2 minutes left Camberwell had opportunities to take the lead yet were just unfortunate the ball didn’t fall. Geordie Daff gave the Suns the lead with Dylan Johnstone closing the game out with 2 clutch free throws at the end. The Dragons fell just short with chances down the stretch now awaiting their next opportunity to creep back to the top of the table.

Collingwood 76 Def. McKinnon 64
It was the upset of the week for our Youth Women as the All Star’s took down the Cougars by 3 points in a down-to-the-wire game with free throw being the key. McKinnon’s Kayla Welsh knocked down 2 from 2 to bring the game to 1 point with just over 2 minutes left, Frances Shell from Collingwood made 1 from 2 to stretch it out to 2 points then again making 1 from 2 with little to no time left on the clock to hold the W. Collingwood got to the line 29 times to McKinnon’s 13 creating momentum through their paint penetration and aggressiveness on the ring. McKinnon capitalized well of Collingwood’s turnovers and missed shots, scoring 39 of their 64.

Maccabi 83 Def. Mornington 80
Maccabi remains on top of the Watson table after a close win over the Breakers on Saturday night. 6 and 0 after 5 rounds, Maccabi’s Youth boys are one of the last to be undefeated in Big V competition. Jarred Fibishenko continues to dominate the league finishing with a 30-point double-double with teammates Chernovsky and De Bortoli adding 15 points each to the 3-point win. Maccabi pulled down a massive 28 offensive rebounds for the game going hand in hand with their 44 points in the paint and 29 more scoring opportunities. With 24 turnovers for the game, the Breakers found ways to keep themselves in the game, free throws being one of them. Will anyone be able to take down this Maccabi team or will their streak of wins continue?

Whittlesea 67 Def. Western Port 66
An absolute thriller in Youth Two Women as the Pacers snatch a win over the Steelers by just 1 point in a 4th place battle. After a time-out and well-drawn-up play, Isabella Ryan found herself after a curl cut to the ring making a very tough bucket over 2 sets of hands to put the Pacers up by 1. With a timeout remaining for the Steelers, Madison Lesiuk had an opportunity to retake the lead and win yet it was not meant to be as the ball bounced around on the ring before jumping off. With Western Port notching the biggest lead with 13 points, the Pacers persevered and brought the game back scoring 25 points in the 4th to take the game out.
