Macey McGlead is a young coach on the rise. After completing Year 12 in 2023, she has already taken on several coaching roles both at her local club Korumburra, and is part of the Future Development Program (FDP) at Basketball Victoria (BV).
As a Korumburra local, and a talented player, she was part of Basketball Victoria’s State Development Program (SDP), our elite performance pathway. Her passion grew for coaching as she was influenced by many of her coaches throughout her young career. From her local Korumburra coaches through to her state coaches at BV, she began to understand the nuances of coaching and the positive influence coaches can have on young athletes.
Her coaching talent was highlighted at this year’s 2024 Southern Cross Challenge (SCC) where she led her young team through the tournament unbeaten to win the tournament. She does acknowledge that winning isn’t everything, however it was the communication, growth and effort her team gave her that inspired her throughout the tournament to keep challenging her team. Throughout the tournament Macey was grateful to have the support of the BV High Performance coaching team, including Troy Parker, Rob Coulter and Zoe Carr, who gave her invaluable guidance and the confidence to keep persisting.
After experiencing our sport from a playing perspective and now moving into coaching, Macey has a deeper understanding of what coaches of all levels go through to get the most of out their team. As she says, “As a player, the only thing I had to worry about was getting to the stadium, play, listen, and respect coaches. Whereas now, coaching - at events I’m thinking late at night about game plays, match ups for what I will need to do for the next game which 9 times out of 10 means my sleep is interrupted.”
Zoe Carr, High Performance Head Coach Country was excited to hear that Macey was interested in coaching and becoming part of the BV coaching team.
“Macey was a committed and talented athlete throughout our Country Vic pathway and to see her now stepping into the coaching space, fills me with pride. She has genuine care for her athletes and drive to improve. I think she has a real future in coaching.”
Macey's passion and genuine care for people shines through as she guides her young athletes, encouraging them to reach their fullest potential on and off the court. It’s going to be exciting to watch this young coach grow and evolve.
