Victoria, Melbourne - Across Victoria, primary school girls are discovering a love for basketball in a space where they feel empowered to try, fail and succeed without judgement.
Basketball Victoria is proud to bring FREE girls-only Skills, Fun & Play clinics to primary schools across the state, made possible through funding from the Australian Government's Play Our Way program.
"It was so much fun, I had a blast! I wish we had it once a week!" - one Year 3 participant said.
The program has been making waves in schools, with an impressive 234 classes successfully delivered to 70 primary schools since May this year, reaching 5690 girls across Victoria. These sessions are designed to be fun, safe and inclusive, catering to all ability levels in a positive, supportive environment. Whether students are new to basketball or already passionate about the game, the clinics offer a fantastic opportunity to stay active, connect with peers and build self-belief both on and off the court.
Creating Confidence Through Connection
The response from schools has been overwhelmingly positive. St Mary's Hampton highlighted how the program "builds their confidence in a comfortable environment," whilst Berwick Primary School noted that "girls can feel more confident when they're playing with other girls."
Anita Diano, Basketball Victoria's Play Our Way coordinator, has witnessed the transformative impact firsthand:
"The girls-only environment has been incredibly beneficial. I've seen them participate without hesitation and fully engage in the skill sessions. Many teachers have approached me afterwards to share how girls who had never taken part in sports before are now getting involved and genuinely enjoying the experience. It's so encouraging to see this program making such a positive impact!"
A Program That's Making a Difference
The clinics focus on skill development, enjoyment and fostering a love of physical activity in a space where girls feel comfortable trying new things. By removing competitive pressure and creating an inclusive atmosphere, the program is successfully encouraging participation from students who might otherwise shy away from sport, and the results speak for themselves.
Building on this success, Basketball Victoria remains committed to creating opportunities for primary school girls to discover their potential, both as athletes and as confident young individuals.
