Sporting Schools bookings for Term 1 are now open and we are calling all schools to get involved with everyone’s game, basketball, in 2025.
Basketball has been played in Victoria since 1905 and has the highest participation rate of the sport nation-wide. Currently growing at a rate more than 5% per year, basketball can become the largest participation sport for both males and females in Victoria with school programs and initiatives helping to connect our community to our game and the opportunity to be more active outside of the school environment.
In 2024 alone, Basketball Victoria saw a 30% increase in sporting school bookings, 160 of those bookings were in rural and regional areas demonstrating the reach and interest basketball attracts right across the state and from a very early age.
Currently, basketball is on track to engage 55,000 students in Victoria through the Sporting Schools program this year. With each grant program requiring a minimum of four sessions per student, this initiative has created over 220,000 opportunities for kids to stay active and enjoy the sport.
What is Sporting Schools?
Sporting Schools is an Australian government initiative designed to provide funding to help schools increase children participation and connect them with community sport opportunities. Research shows that quality sport and physical activity in schools has a positive influence on children’s confidence, competence and motivation to be active at school and throughout their life.
Sporting Schools fosters partnerships between basketball associations and schools to promote involvement in sport outside of school. Designed for primary students and those in Years 7 and 8 as a free at the point of delivery program. Sporting Schools provides teacher-led formats along with high-quality resources to empower educators in delivering effective sports programs not only building capability in the coach workforce through funding of coach delivered programs but also supporting students in building a foundation for lifelong engagement in physical activity and sport.
There is a funding component to assist eligible primary schools with additional delivery costs due to location or students with disability.
Linda Woods, Basketball Victoria Participation Officer said – “Sporting Schools provides an important transition to play opportunity for young students in Victoria and we hope to see the growth that basketball as a sport has enjoyed through this program continue to grow into 2025 and beyond.”
