Round 2 of the 2024 Championship Men saw some teams stamp their authority, with a couple of teams showing why they are the teams to watch out for!
Here is a recap of the round two action from the weekend.
Pakenham (117) def Blackburn (109)
The Pakenham Warriors continued their unbeaten start to their Championship division campaign, going down to the wire in overtime. In a high scoring first quarter, the Vikings came back in the second quarter, 28-20. Whilst the Warriors won the third quarter, 23-19, the Vikings fought back strongly in the last quarter, the Warriors won in overtime period, 13-5 to seal the win.
Malik Colvin-Seldon was huge on both ends of the floor, finishing with 39 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Matt Berkec played a huge role off the bench with 16 points, whilst Joshua Dow finished with 19 points.
James Legan and Kortland Martin both finished with 33 points for the Vikings.
Wyndham (96) def. Melbourne Uni (86)
Wyndham continued their undefeated start to the season, defeating Melbourne Uni by 10 points.
Wyndham controlled the first quarter, 26-17, Melbourne Uni controlled the middle two quarters, 30-22 second quarter and 20-19 third quarter. Whydham finished the game strongly, 29-19 last night to secure the victory.
Myles Thomas finished with 30 points, 12 rebounds and 1 block, whilst Aaron Dolny finished with 27 points off the bench.
Nicholas Masunda finished with 19 points, whilst Joel Rimes finished with 17 points for Melbourne Uni.
McKinnon (115) def. Western Port (84)
The Cougars continued their unbeaten start to their 2024 campaign, defeating Western Port by 31 points.
The Cougars won 3 out of 4 quarters, 23-14 second quarter and 28-24 last quarter to secure the victory.
The Cougars were on song from three-point range, shooting at 56%, whilst dominating the rebounds.
Adam Anderson top scored for the Cougars, finishing with 26 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds. Steve Wooten also top scored with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.
Anthony Kimble top scored with 23 points for the game.
Shepparton (100) def. Camberwell (79)
The Gators secured their second win of the season, defeating the Dragons by 21 points.
The Gators shot the ball well from three-point range, shooting at 40%. The Gators had a strong third quarter, 29-15 to secure the victory.
Jayden Coke finished the game with 31 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal, whilst Dylan Wilkie and Lachlan Kego finished with 14 points each.
Hume City Broncos (91) def Keysborough (65)
Hume City secured their first win of their 2024 campaign, defeating the Cougars by 26 points.
After a tight first quarter, the Broncos controlled the second quarter onwards, 22-14 second quarter and 30-17 last quarter to secure the victory.
The Broncos won the points from bench, 17-6 and points from turnovers, 13-6.
Stone finished as the top scorer for the Broncos, finish with 25 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. Malik McKinney and Carlo Camp also had solid scoring contributions, finishing with 20 and 17 points respectively.
Gerrard Newby finished as the top scorer for the Cougars with 17 points.
Sunbury (98) def. Bellarine (77)
The Jets secured their first win of their 2024 campaign, defeating the Storm by 21 points.
The Jets controlled three out of the four quarters, 28-18 second quarter to secure the victory.
The Jets had moments of scoring runs of their own, 11-4 in the first quarter, shooting the ball well from two-point range and three-point range, shooting at 48%.
Keysborough (90) def Melbourne Uni (85)
In a thrilling four quarters of action, the Cougars secured their second win of the season, winning by just five points.
In a tight first half, the Cougars controlled the third quarter, 32-24 and last quarter, 20-16 to secure the win.
Anthony Williams top scored for the Cougars with 28 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds. Nick Carlson and Trent Andre finished with 17 points each.
Now that Round 2 is wrapped up, we move towards Round 3 – who will find their first victory of the season and who will remain undefeated?
