Victoria, Waurn Ponds - Basketball Victoria is excited to see construction begin on the new Waurn Ponds Sporting Complex, a six-court multi-sport facility that will provide a major boost to basketball participation and community sport across the Geelong region.
The project, announced this week by Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence, marks a significant milestone in a long-term vision driven by strong advocacy from Basketball Victoria and supported by Geelong United Basketball.
Following a huge lobbying effort to both State and Federal Governments, the project secured funding in 2022, including $6 million in Federal support, as part of the Commonwealth Games legacy planning. The Waurn Ponds Sporting Complex was funded alongside the Armstrong Creek four-court stadium, which is also currently under construction. Together, these two facilities will deliver an additional 10 basketball courts to the Geelong region, which will be a game-changer for one of Victoria’s fastest-growing basketball communities.
The new Waurn Ponds complex will feature six high-ball multi-sport courts, a regional-level gymnastics facility, community dance hall and studio, and inclusive amenities such as a Changing Places facility, sensory room, and multi-faith space.
Basketball Victoria CEO Nick Honey said the project was a testament to the power of collaboration and long-term planning, “Basketball Victoria has been proud to work alongside Geelong United, Sport and Recreation Victoria, and all levels of government to help bring this vision to life,” Honey said. “The Geelong region has seen enormous growth in basketball participation, and this investment will make a lasting difference by improving access to quality courts and supporting the continued development of the sport at every level.”
Geelong United Basketball CEO Mark Neeld said the new facility would have a huge impact on local participation. “This project shows what can be achieved when local and state organisations work together for the good of the community,” Neeld said. “The demand for basketball in Geelong has never been higher, and these new courts at Waurn Ponds and Armstrong Creek will make an enormous difference for our players, families and clubs. It’s a fantastic outcome for the region.”
The Waurn Ponds Sporting Complex is expected to be completed by early 2027, creating a vibrant hub for sport, recreation, and community connection.
