Currently playing for the Western Port Steelers, Jenna McCormick has become an inspiration for young athletes and hopes to encourage the next generation of girls at Western Port.
McCormick, following in the footsteps of her two older brothers, began playing basketball at the age of five. Her passion for the game grew as she progressed through the ranks. Starting in the VJBL in the bottom age under-12s for Southern Peninsula, she moved to Dandenong in under-14s, completing her junior career there before joining the Big V competition.
“I started Big V when I was 14, and there was no youth league where I played. I was one of the youngest on the team, and if it wasn’t for them, I don’t think I’d still be playing —they made it such a great environment.”
McCormick found success in the VC competition and used these experiences as motivation to improve her game and prove her capabilities on the court. . Her journey has been marked by perseverance and a steadfast commitment to the sport she loves.
“People get caught up on what team you're playing in, but I think if you can be playing at a high level, the number doesn't really matter. You keep working. In primary school, I made a higher level in different things, but that didn't faze me too much. I play basketball because I love it. That's the main reason why I play. I didn't play for accolades or state teams or anything like that. Playing at a high level, especially coming from a small association, playing VC was great exposure and probably set me up for the rest of my career.”
Ultimately, McCormick's experiences in overcoming setbacks and making strategic moves in her career underscore her resilience and passion for basketball. Currently with the Western Port Steelers, McCormick has participated in numerous finals and grand finals series. Western Port is a growing club that has recently made significant efforts to build relationships with juniors, running clinics, and creating an inclusive supporter base.
“The juniors turn up to our games, cheering super loud and getting involved. It’s fantastic to be part of something special. They travel to our finals wherever they are. Last year in Bellarine, we had just as many supporters in the stands as the home team—it’s a fair hike from Western Port to Drysdale. Western Port is a great club with amazing people working behind the scenes who don’t get the credit they deserve but are much appreciated by me and our team.”
McCormick's personality shines through, helping her form lasting relationships both on and off the court. After 20 years of playing, Jenna has had many teammates along the way and told us she has some great lifelong friends—from players and staff, to parents of rep kids and club officials.
“It’s special to meet so many different people who all play a part in the Big V.”
While celebrating her own achievements, McCormick also highlights a milestone for her teammate, Rachael Wansbrough.
“Rachael Wansbrough is hitting 350 games this season. It’s special to share the same milestone in the same year with Rachael. I’ve played against and with her for close to 100 games, mostly towards the end of our careers. She’s incredible, overcoming injuries and putting her body on the line every week.”
With promising youth coming through Western Port, McCormick stands as a leader at the club and enjoys mentoring the younger players. Her experience and dedication to the game make her an invaluable resource for aspiring athletes. McCormick takes pride in guiding the younger players, helping them develop their skills, and fostering a positive team environment.
“It is very special. You don’t realise how much impact you may have on a junior. As players, we play because we enjoy it, but you forget that kids in VJBL or domestic really look up to the veterans.”
