Western Port has taken out this year’s Two Bays Cup with a 3-1 victory over Mornington despite an incredible one-point Championship Men’s win from the Breakers stopping the clean-sweep.
The Steelers hosted the 2022 Two Bays Cup pre-season clash on Saturday night, with the home side winning the Division 1 Women, Youth League Men and Youth League Women’s clashes before the Breakers took out a nail-biting Championship Men’s game.
The Championship Men’s game certainly lived up to the hype. The Steelers got off to a strong start, up 16 at the half. But it was Mornington who rallied in the 3rd quarter cutting it back to 11 heading into 4th. In a heart racing finish, it was the Breakers upsetting the Steelers perfect night with 79 – 78 victory.
To the other games, tipping-off proceedings were Division 1 Women’s and Youth League Men’s games. In the women’s game, the Steelers prove to be too good for the Breakers who fell short by 7 points at the final buzzer.
Similarly, in the Youth Mens game, Steelers pulled ahead late to snatch victory by 5 points.
The Steelers continued their winning form through the night with the Youth League Women’s winning all 4 quarters against the Breakers.
Western Port General Manager Tyler Molloy credited the crowd and the positive score lines for the electric atmosphere.
“It was amazing to have so many people in attendance and supporting both associations,” he said. “Plus, it was great to run two games at once side by side and some close games always create an intense atmosphere even if it is only a practice game.”
Molloy also looked ahead to the upcoming season and is optimistic for both the Steelers and Breakers season campaigns.
“For both associations’ Youth sides, it looks promising with so much great young talent on display, no doubt there will be ups and downs, but great signs for the future.
“The Breakers Men will take a lot from the win - plus a lot of positives for our men as they start to gel as a team.
“The Steelers women look ready for the season with a lot returning players from the last year.”
The Big V season is scheduled to start later this month on Saturday 19 March with Western Port facing McKinnon to tip off the season while Mornington will square off against Craigieburn.
