The time has come…Big V is officially back in 2023!
Yes, Round 1 of the Big V season tips-off this weekend. This year is shaping up to be the most electrifying season yet. We have 137 teams across 49 associations competing for championship glory in our 12 divisions. The excitement is building, so without further ado let’s preview the action-packed season ahead.
Looking to shake things up in Championship Men’s division is the Bellarine Storm. After a stellar season in the Division One Men conference last year, which ended with a Championship trophy. The Storm has been promoted to the highest division and will look to continue their winning ways. They’ll face strong contenders Blackburn Vikings in Round 1. However, the team to watch for the Champ Men this season will be the last year's champions, Wyndham. Can they go back-to-back this season? We can’t wait to find out…
Speaking of Wyndham, the Championship Women Wyndham team will look to ride the high of their exceptional season last year, right into Round 1. Like the Champ Men, they were crowned division champions for 2022 and without question, will look to do the same this year. They face the always-tough Hume City Broncos in Round 1. Another exciting matchup this weekend will be last year's runners-up, Bulleen Boomers taking on the new kid on the block, Sherbrooke Suns. The Suns were promoted from Division One Women last year. Can they set the tone early and knock-off Bulleen?
Plenty is happening in our Division One conferences. In the Men, we see Gippsland United move up and Chelsea move down into Division One Men. Chelsea will look to regroup and find success this season after a tough campaign in the Championship Men conference last season. To the Women and Warrnambool are hoping to kickstart their year off with a win, after two heartbreaking losses in the Grand Finals last year. Camberwell, Mildura, and Western Port will also look to continue their strong form into this year.
Division 2 in both the Men's and Women's see no major shake-ups this year with no new teams joining either competition. Mornington will go in as favourites for the Women and the Men will be a toss-up. Both last season's Grand Final teams, Gippsland and Pakenham have been promoted, so it begs the question…which team will lift the trophy for Division Two Men?
Our Youth Leagues conferences are ready to roll with the best of Victoria’s elite youth talent set to take the league by storm. There will be a plethora of emerging talent on display this year and we can’t wait for the next generation of Big V stars to put on a show.
