Pakenham Warriors hosted the Australian Men's Deaf Team in a Charity Match fundraiser on Sunday, raising $7000 for the team.
The Warriors and Goannas took to the court to fundraise and support the Goannas, the Australian Deaf Basketball Team.
With very limited funding available for the team, it was an amazing community effort raising more than $7000 to support the Goannas. All funds raised were donated to the Goannas organisation in their quest for a second Asia Pacific Gold Medal.
“It feels amazing that our whole community can come together and support these lads. However, I wish it was even more. These guys are not funded by BA and pay their own way to represent our country all over the world.”
“If we can do this for them and be a part of that even just a little bit, I couldn’t be happier.” Warriors Coach, Rob Roberts said.
It was great day all around with plenty of entertainment and prizes to keep spectators busy before the big game. The local school choir provided the pre-match entertainment before the Warriors and Goannas tipped off.
“Pakenham came out! We had over 500 people, an amazing DJ and Candy Hertz on the Mic all day. This was like a grand final! IT was amazing.” Roberts said.
In a very hot stadium, both teams played hard right till the final buzzer. The Warriors managing to come out on top with the final score of 105 – 52.
“Our team have obviously been training together for a little while already… Goannas are just starting their campaign, both teams played at very high level.”
“Goannas showed the heart they always do, even when it was out of reach to win, not one of them hung their heads and they all left the court in a shower of sweat. They are seriously a great team that are very motivational to watch.” Roberts expressed.
