Victoria, Melbourne - When it comes to road safety, we’re all on the same team, Basketball Victoria (BV) and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) are joining forces to promote safer choices on Victorian roads, but it doesn’t stop there.
For many families, basketball can involve a lot of time on the road, especially if your family is involved in any of our statewide leagues - NBL1 South, Big V, Junior Country Championships (JCC) and the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL). The stats for just one our leagues, the VJBL, are staggering, with hundreds of families travelling across the state every Friday night to compete. They collectively travel over 18 million kilometres each year -with over 1,600 teams from 54 associations competing across 80+ venues statewide.
Every journey to training, to a game, or to a tournament is an opportunity to make the right choice when it comes to road safety.
Speeding remains a major contributor to lives lost and serious injuries on Victorian roads and this year’s message from the TAC is clear, make the right choice, and slow down on the road. Be the Difference. Basketball Victoria is right behind the message and encouraging our basketball community to make the right choice when on the road.
TAC and BV are calling on every player, coach, parent, and supporter to help build a culture of safe driving within our basketball community, and it all starts with signing up to the Club Participation Program, then participating in the Road Safety Round; 19 January – 1 February 2026.
As part of our partnership, all Victorian basketball clubs and associations are encouraged to sign up to participate in the TAC Club Participation Program which starts now and runs until end of March 2026, and also take part in the Road Safety Round.
During the TAC Club Participation program, our clubs and associations are invited to:
- - Sign up to participate in the Road Safety Round
- - Promote road safety messaging at venues
- - Use the TAC resources and collateral made available through the program
- - Share safety-focused content via your club and association media (website, socials, email and in venues).
Road Safety Round is a chance for our community to come together, highlight safe driving behaviours, and reinforce the message that every kilometre and every decision matters.
The TAC Club Participation Program
The TAC Club Participation Program is aimed to empower our clubs and associations to champion road safety with a specific focus on reducing speeding.
The mission is simple:
One death on our roads is one too many. Your club can be the difference.
By encouraging safe driving behaviours and applying to be part of the TAC Club Participation Program, clubs and associations have the opportunity to share in a prize pool worth $40,000, while also protecting their members, families, and local communities.
Get Your Club Involved
Basketball Victoria encourages all clubs and associations to join the TAC Club Participation Program. Together, we can ensure more Victorians from our basketball community get home safely.
