Melbourne University 99 def. Wyndham 92
It’s official, Melbourne University is Wyndham’s bogey team this season, already giving them 2 out of their 4 losses this year as they came storming home with a 25 to 16 final quarter to take the win. Melbourne University were fortunate to have several high-level contributors in this game with Liam Killey doing the damage inside with 18 points and 8 rebounds, whilst recruit Isaac Turner got it done with 21 points off the bench. As expected, Maurice Howard tried his best to keep the lead for his team with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and was supported by young sharpshooter Aaron Dolny as he poured in 21 points, it wasn’t enough in the end as Melbourne University proved too strong in the 4th quarter.

Wyndham 81 def. Bulleen 76
This was potentially a grand final preview as Bulleen played host to Wyndham on Saturday night. Wyndham have been dominant so far this season but Bulleen has given them their biggest scare yet, led by Annabel Deerbon who finished with 21 points and 7 rebounds. The rest of the Boomers squad was able to contribute evenly which proved to be a challenge for Wyndham’s defence across the game. For Wyndham, it was the usual suspects of Amanda Paschal and Dyani Ananiev who got the job done again and pushed their team to victory. Paschal had an enormous game, finishing with 32 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists, whilst Ananiev was a scoring punch off the bench, pouring in 18 points. Bulleen may have created the blueprints for getting close to beating Wyndham for the rest of the league, watch this space!

Warrandyte 87 def. Gippsland United 86
Warrandyte have made a statement to the rest of the league that they are going to be making a run at finals this year and will be a threat to win. Warrandyte were led by Matthew Scammell who has found himself in a purple patch of form after a slow start to the season, he finished with 25 points and 3 assists. Michael Birt II also ensured that he had an influence on this one, finishing with 18 points to go with 8 rebounds. For Gippsland United, they were grateful to have veteran Stephen O’Brien back to form with 18 points and 11 rebounds whilst Kody Tibballs was also influential off the bench, dropping 13 points to help try to get Gippsland over the line.

Altona 63 def. Melbourne University 59
An enormous final quarter by the Altona Gators made up for the horrific third-quarter display and landed the Gators a much-needed win to break their streak. It was a huge 3-point shot by Jordan Wilson who gave the Gators the eventual lead with just over a minute remaining in the game and they never looked back, knocking down clutch free throws down the stretch. Across the night it was Kayla Salmons who did most of the damage for the visiting side as she finished with 16 points to go with 14 rebounds. Whilst for Melbourne University, it was Amelia Smith who kept them in it all night, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds, unfortunately, it was not enough on the night as they lost one, they would’ve loved to have won.

Wallan 81 def. Craigieburn 76
Craigieburn put up a huge fight on Saturday night but didn’t have enough in the tank to cause the upset win over an impressive Wallan outfit. In the absence of Gene Vocale, it gave additional opportunity to Calvin Jazmin who stepped up on the night to score 19 points, whilst the ever-reliable Blake Dickinson also had one of his better games for the season with 15 points and 9 rebounds. For Wallan, Keenan Gorski, Tom O’Connor, Tyler Best and Dominic Bruno all had strong performances, all finishing with double-figure points and almost double-figure rebounds. Tom O’Connor had one of his better performances of the season with 20 points and 8 rebounds, falling just short of a double-double.

Gippsland United 87 def. Wallan 80
Gippsland United jumped out of the blocks well in this one, starting the game with a 26 to 13 first quarter. From that point forward, Wallan tried to claw it back, bit by bit, but it wasn’t enough. MaKenzie Miller is putting together an impressive season and was no different in this one, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds to her name. It was the energy off the bench from Alahna Arnason that proved to be a standout having a huge double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Wallan showed that they have more contributors than just Kylah Collins, with Olivia Dalmau stepping up her game on the offensive end with 24 points and 3 assists and Kaitlyn Bickerton also having an influence with 10 points and 8 rebounds. League MVP favourite Kylah Collins was again impressive, with 22 points and 17 rebounds, however, it was foul trouble that didn’t allow her to have more of an influence to help her team get the win.

Diamond Valley 109 Def. McKinnon 105
Our highest scoring games thus far for Youth Champ Men with the Eagles just getting over the line away from home. Daniel Poelsma came out of the gates quick with 2 straight 3s but it was his brother Nathan Poelsma who took over this game with 35pts shooting 8 from 14 from the land of plenty. Some massive scoring quarters from both sides Diamond Valley scored 66 in the first half and McKinnon scored 60 in the second half. Dean Simos top scored for the Cougars with 27 points yet seemed Diamond Valley shot the ball too well shooting 47% from 3pt for the game.

Keilor 77 Def. Dandenong 76
Free throws win games, so they say. A slow start from both the Rangers and Thunder in the first quarter with Keilor finding form in the 2nd leading the break by just 4. Dandenong brought the game back to 1 point by 3 quarter time, they then went back and forth the entire 4th. Keilor reaching an 11-point margin halfway through the 4th, the Rangers crept their way back to 4 points with less than a 1-minute left. Georgia Taylor stepped into a deep 3 cutting the game to 1 with 15 seconds left. With jump balls, missed shots, blocks and the like all happening within 10 seconds, Dandenong found themselves at the line with 4 seconds left. Unfortunately, unable to connect on both from the stripe, Keilor held the win in a very close competitive battle.

Keysborough 81 Def. Coburg 75
It was a tough weekend for Coburg dropping both their weekend games, Sunday to Keysborough in a close fight. The Cougars came in with fresh legs after a disappointing loss by Coburg on Saturday night. Keysborough spread the minutes around very well with every player stepping onto the court, scoring 2 or more points with no one playing more than 23 minutes. Coburg on the other hand ran with their starting group for most of the game with Majier Adut doing all he could to keep his boys in the race. Finish with 30 points as the leading scorer for the game, Adut didn’t get quite enough help from his group unable to generate stops from this deep Keysborough unit.

McKinnon 88 Def. Wyndham 77
It was not meant to be for Wyndham’s Youth Women this weekend dropping 2 games, their second to McKinnon by just 11 points. It was not their night on Saturday falling to Bulleen in quite a deficit. McKinnon, trying to make the push into the top 3, were not going to be any easier. The Cougars were very consistent throughout the 4 quarters, scoring over 20 points in each whilst holding Wyndham to just 29 points in the second half. The duo of Keane and Leonard went for 23 points each with Keane shooting 4 from 9 from deep. Aleks Connolly finished with 21 points for Wyndham as the leading scorer, Spehar off the bench had 14 points and 10 rebounds unable to help her girls over the line.

Mornington 109 Def. Wallan 107
An incredible game in Youth Two Men as Mornington and Wallan went to a second overtime with Mornington getting over the line by a slim 2 points. A very busy crowd with many Mornington juniors at the wings, it was a great atmosphere, and the on-court action did not disappoint. Dylan Lombardo made an exceptional play-off, a rebound close to the end of regulation to tie the game at 87 sending this game to the first overtime. With Mornington striking first, it was essentially back and forth with many free throws and a tough 3pt from Wolfe who tied the game again at 99. Again, Mornington made the first move in the second overtime, Wallan was able to connect early but it was the Breakers who continued to find the bottom of the basket leading to a 2-point win.

Sherbrooke 66 Def. Mornington 62
One of only 3 games in Youth Two Women saw Sherbrook notch their second win for the weekend after a great win over Western Port on Saturday night. Off to a flying start, the Breakers got out to a 25-8 lead by the end of the first term. Sherbrooke, remaining focused came out with a bang in the second half dominating all over the court. They managed to take the lead and held it in the last minute by the hands of Olivia Kingston, draining 2 free throws. Teagan Burton sealed the win with 4 straight free throws of her own to round out her score to 10 points. Kingston came away with the player of the game with 31 points and 17 rebounds.
