Basketball on the Mornington Peninsula is set for a bright future with the collaboration of three local associations to form the Peninsula Basketball Project Group.
With Basketball Victoria providing strategic support and advice, the Peninsula Basketball Project Group has been formed by the three associations within the Mornington Peninsula Shire council - Western Port Basketball Association (WPBA), Southern Peninsula Basketball Association (SPBA) and Mornington and District Basketball Association (MDBA).
An independent chair – Jess Jones, has been appointed to lead and assist the associations with Basketball Victoria’s guidance. The projects’ objective is to discuss and explore collaborative opportunities and initiatives to advance and grow basketball in the local area. The group is also looking for a single voice to all levels of government to assist strategic growth, with facility development as a key priority. These initiatives will be based on what is best for basketball on the Peninsula in 2023 and beyond, with the group planning to consult widely with all members, stakeholders and participants.
Basketball Victoria’s Team Leader of Member and Community Services – Jodie Harlow, says the need for more facilities and streamlined pathways calls for a united approach to enable growth.
“The data already tells us that basketball is a high participation sport on the Peninsula, with over 8000 registered participants hitting the court every week. What we need now is to see how this base can grow, what strategies and facilities do we need to assist that growth, what programs can be delivered and what the pathway looks like to support athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and administrators.”
Peninsula Basketball Project Group Chair – Jess Jones, is excited to lead the project and deliver on the key objectives identified by the associations.
“We all know that basketball in Victoria already has a large participation base, plus it is the fastest growing team sport coming out of COVID-19. I can already see that the representatives on this project, backed by the boards and committees of the associations, are keen to work together on achieving great outcomes. Projects such as this have already been developed in other parts of the State to help facilitate growth, so we want to make sure the Peninsula doesn’t get left behind.”
