Basketball Victoria would like to welcome Matthew Paton who has commenced his role as High-Performance Hub Lead Coach at Geelong, replacing David Herbert who is now Head Coach of the Centre of Excellence Women’s program. Paton will have a dual role as he is also the Director of Coaching for Geelong United Basketball.
Paton has a stellar resume, more recently assistant coach of the women’s program at the Centre of Excellence in Canberra for three years and Head Coach of the Australian Women’s 3X3 team, guiding them to two Asia Cup gold medals in 2017 and 2019.
Paton's coaching journey has taken him across the globe including Europe and the USA, with BC Sarnen (2002), Antelope Valley College (2004) and the University of Hawaii (NCAA Div 1) women’s program for four years (2005-09), then his time in Australia has included a year in the NBL with the Hunter Pirates (2003) and 4 years (2013-2016) with the Mount Gambier Pioneers, which reaped four consecutive South Conference Championships and two SEABL (now NBL1) Championships, and more recently as Head Coach in NBL1 South for the Geelong Supercats Women’s team.
The next coaching chapter sees Paton leading Basketball Victoria’s State Development Program in the Geelong High Performance Hub covering the Barwon region.
Basketball Victoria's General Manager of High Performance – Grant Wallace – is excited to have Paton on board whose pedigree and enthusiasm will help develop athletes in the Geelong region and surrounding country areas.
“Matt comes highly respected within the basketball community and an outstanding coaching resume in national and international arenas. Our Geelong HP Hub covers a wide base of passionate basketballers, with many high quality identified female and male athletes for the program to develop.”
