Basketball Victoria will proceed with running the Kumon Country-Metro Challenge this weekend from Friday 14 January to Monday 17 January 2022.
To keep the event as safe as possible for participants, parents and staff alike, the following COVID-Safe measures, made in consultation with Knox Basketball Inc (operators of State Basketball Centre) and all other stakeholders, will be put into effect:
Department of Health COVID protocols: The 2022 Kumon Country-Metro Challenge will align with any Victorian Government directives. If you are feeling unwell, please stay at home and get tested.
Training sessions: All training sessions will be closed to parents and spectators, with only required individuals allowed into the venue/s until the afternoon’s games which commence from 2pm.
Venue attendance: All participants, coaches and parents will be required to leave the venue as soon as possible once their games have been completed to ensure the minimum number of people are within the venue at any one time.
Extra events: All additional events that were part of the Challenge itinerary – including Basketball Australia Pathways USA College presentations with Darren Smith, the 2022 Hub Program Launch and parent information sessions – have been cancelled to keep people at the event to a minimum. (Summary notes shall be created and circulated to participants of these sessions).
Positive cases: Protocols and processes for circumstances if any positive cases are detected, as well as close contacts/social contacts will be distributed before the commencement of the event. The Victorian Government has guidelines here for close or social contacts of positive cases.
Face masks: All patrons over the age of 8 who are not actively engaged in an exertive role on court – whether as a player, coach or official, are required to wear a mask at all times indoors (unless they possess a valid medical exemption). Social distancing behavior is strongly recommended at all times.
Held at the State Basketball Centre, Wantirna South, and Boronia Basketball Stadium, Boronia, the Kumon Country-Metro Challenge is designed to be a once-off tournament to supplement several previously cancelled high performance events traditionally held in January each year. This will ensure Victorian athletes are able to access elite competitions to prepare them for High Performance tournaments within the 2022 basketball year.
