Basketball Victoria is seeking women with leadership ambitions to apply for the second edition of the Courage and Confidence to Lead program.
The program has been created specifically for women seeking greater opportunities on their association boards and committees, and will provide an opportunity to cultivate professional skills, develop enhanced leadership styles, and join a network of motivated women who are the future leaders of basketball in Victoria. This course is enthusiastically supported by Margot Foster AM OLY who will help facilitate the program in conjunction with Basketball Victoria and Deakin University.
Basketball Victoria encourages women who are executive, committee members, or presidents (who have served six months or less in that position) to apply. The program will be facilitated in-person on Mondays between March and September 2024, with seven full-day sessions held at an inner-city location. Ten places within the cohort will be offered to women affiliated with rural or regional associations, with the goal of accelerating female participation in leadership roles across the state.
Basketball Victoria’s Women and Girls Participation Coordinator Katherine Gourley said that she jumped at the chance to host the program in 2024.
“The Courage and Confidence program is an incredible opportunity to bring together a group of aspiring women leaders in basketball and give them the tools and knowledge that they need to succeed in the next step of their leadership journeys,” Gourley said. “This sport has such a wide range of opportunities for leadership in off-court roles, and we want more women feeling equipped to bring their ideas, values, and visions for the sport to the board table”.
Participant of the 2019 program and current Association Development Officer with Basketball Victoria, Rebecca McIntyre described the Courage and Confidence to Lead course as a fabulous experience.
“To be surrounded by like minded women to learn from, and who then support you throughout the program and your professional and personal life is something that I cherish dearly,” McIntyre said. “We are all still great friends now and continue to be each other’s biggest cheerleaders along our journeys”.
If you have ambitions of promotion to higher ranks of boards and committees throughout Victorian basketball associations, this is the leadership program for you. These sessions will guide successful candidates to harness their strengths in addition to gaining access to extensive mentoring opportunities, high-calibre executive strategies, and the tools necessary to further their executive careers.
This opportunity will be limited to only twenty successful candidates, who must be available to attend all seven workshops, as well as a celebration evening to be held in late 2024. A networking event open to participants of the 2019 and 2024 programs will be held in mid-2025.
Applications open Friday 1 December and close on Friday 22 December 2023. No late applications will be accepted.
