Round 4 of the 2024 Championship Women saw some teams put their authority on the ladder and some impressive individual performances, not to mention a log jam top four race.
Warrnambool (71) def McKinnon (59)
Warrnambool continue to put ice on any those who thought they'd struggle with being promoted to Championship, collecting their 5th win, this time against McKinnon. With the Cougars taking the first quarter, 20-13, the Mermaids won took control in the second quarter, 25-13 and fourth quarter, 19-11 to secure the victory.
Leading scorers for the Mermaids were Dakota Crichton with 26 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Maelys Pineau also played a key role off the bench, with 11 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Emily Maltezos led the way for the Cougars, with 15 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. A’Lexxus Davis finished with 12 points, 18 rebounds, two blocks and one assist.
Bellarine (68) def Sherbrooke (55)
Bellarine continued their strong start to the season. After a tight first quarter, the Storm won all four quarters of the match, outscoring the Suns 21-19 in the third quarter and 16-11 in the last quarter.
Chantelle Hall finished as the top scorer for the Storm, with 23 points, eight rebounds and two assists, shooting at 64 per cent. Bridgette Rettstatt with 18 points, 19 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Courtney Strait finished with 14 points.
Miranda Gartner top scored for the Suns, with 15 points, while Alicia Carline, 18 points, 14 rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Wyndham (97) def Sunbury (75)
Wyndham led all night from start to finish against the Sunbury Jets. A strong display on the offensive and defensive end saw Wyndham shoot 56% from two-point range and convert points from turnovers, 16-2.
Jamilee Pearce was on song from the field, shooting at 74 per cent, finished with 33 points, eight rebounds, one assist, one steal.
Amanda Paschal had 25 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals to lead the way, whilst Tanielle Knight, 16 points, played a great key role.
New import Veronika Mirkovoc played a great game for the Jets, 21 points, 14 rebounds four assists, one assist and one steal.
Bulleen (70) def Camberwell (44)
Bulleen continued their undefeated streak, defeating the Dragons by 26 points.
The Dragons were resilient in the third quarter, 20-12, going on a 15-6 scoring run. The Boomers finished the game strongly, 22-8 to secure the victory.
Keli Romas was Bulleen’s top scorer, finishing with 24 points, four rebounds, four assists and six steals. Maxine Allen, 14 points whilst Sarae Beveridge played a key role off the bench with 12 points.
Emily Whitehouse played a great game for the Dragons with 14 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Bellarine (86) def. Hume City (66)
Bellarine secured their second win for the weekend, defeating Hume by 20 points.
Whilst the Broncos came back in the second quarter, 23-21, the Storm went on a 13-4 run of their own in the last quarter.
Bridgette Rettstatt finished with 24 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and one assist.
Tashia Overby was excellent for Hume City, with 28 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Warrnambool (75) def Sherbrooke (69)
The Mermaids sealed their second win of the weekend doubles, defeating the Suns by six points in an entertaining match.
After a competitive and tight first quarter, the Suns went into the main break leading by five points. The Mermaids went on a 9-3 scoring run, winning the quarter, 24-14 to take a five-point lead at three quarter time. The Mermaids won the final quarter, 20-19 to secure the victory.
Julia Nielacna had an excellent match, 26 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Dakota Crichton had a great game with 15 points, three steals, and four rebounds.
Miranda Gartner had a great game for the Suns with 18 points.
Wyndham (113) def Pakenham (86)
Wyndham finished their weekend double with a victory over the Pakenham Warriors by 27 points.
Whilst both teams leveled the scoring, 28 all, Wyndham won the first half and last quarter, 31-22 last quarter.
Whilst both teams shot the ball well from two-point range, Wyndham won the second chance points, 15-6, and points from turnovers, 26-18.
Julie Brosseau top scored with 27 points, four rebounds and one steal.
Bree Whatman had a great game for the Warriors, 21 points, five assists, four rebounds.
