Building a Digital Future Together
Basketball Victoria is proud to stand alongside Basketball Australia and our fellow State and Territory Associations in supporting the launch of the Australian Basketball 2040 Vision – Everybody’s Game. This united national plan charts an ambitious and necessary path for basketball to become Australia’s largest team sport by 2040.
Unveiled at the 2025 Australian Basketball Congress, the Vision represents the first time our sport has aligned behind a shared long-term roadmap that strengthens participation, elevates performance pathways and invests in the people, places and systems that power the game.
A Future Built on Collaboration
The development of the 2040 Vision brought together insights from more than 1200 players, coaches, referees, administrators and fans. For us, this collective approach reflects what makes basketball special: a community-driven spirit and a belief that everyone has a role in shaping the future of the sport.
Basketball Victoria fully supports this whole-of-sport direction. As one of Australia’s largest and fastest-growing basketball communities, we recognise the responsibility and opportunity we share in driving digital transformation, strengthening pathways, and supporting the people who bring the game to life.
Leading a Connected Digital Future
Technology is rapidly reshaping how community sport operates — from managing competitions and registrations to delivering seamless and personalised experiences for players, coaches and fans.
At Basketball Victoria, we’re committed to leading in the digital space and ensuring our community benefits from platforms that are connected, scalable and easy to use. Whether it's providing timely and relevant content, modernising registration processes or supporting associations with better tools, digital systems play an essential role in how we deliver our sport.
This new national Vision reinforces the importance of this work. A shared, integrated digital ecosystem — including the rollout of the Basketball Cloud — will create consistency, improve data connection across the country and equip everyone involved in the game with more intuitive and reliable tools.
Sarah Addis, GM – Marketing, Communications and Digital at Basketball Victoria said “Digital transformation isn’t something to fear. It’s an enabler. It creates opportunities to simplify processes, reduce duplication and elevate the experience for participants at every level. As expectations evolve, so must we, continuing to innovate and refine how we engage our community on and off the court.”
Backing the Game Development Levy and WholeofSport Investment
A key driver of the 2040 Vision is the Game Development Levy (GDL), introduced in 2024 to support national initiatives that strengthen the foundations of the sport.
Basketball Victoria strongly supports the GDL and the benefits it brings to our members. The levy is already funding essential work in:
- Officiating and Pathways: developing clearer pathways, new learning tools and national curriculums for referees, scoretable officials and statisticians.
- Coaching and Pathways: building a consistent and aligned national coach education and accreditation framework.
- Digital Transformation: delivering shared platforms, including the Basketball Cloud, that improve connectivity and streamline access for associations and participants.
From 2026, the GDL will also expand its focus to include a nationally endorsed Facilities Strategy and a unified Safe Sport framework — two crucial areas that directly support player wellbeing, community confidence and longterm infrastructure planning.
Strengthening the Foundations of Victorian Basketball
Victoria has long been a powerhouse of Australian basketball, but our continued growth relies on strong partnerships, community connection and future focused thinking.
This national Vision aligns deeply with our priorities: building more inclusive pathways, supporting our volunteers, improving digital systems and ensuring our clubs and associations have the tools they need to thrive. It sets clear objectives — 39 across eight categories — that guide how we work together pre and post Brisbane 2032 Olympics.
The 2040 Vision isn’t just a document. It’s an invitation to collaborate, innovate and champion the values that make basketball so deeply loved across our state.
Looking Ahead
Basketball Victoria CEO Nick Honey welcomes the clarity, ambition and unity this Vision brings to our community. “We are committed to playing our part — leading where we have strength, supporting where others lead, and always putting our community at the centre of our progress.”
Basketball truly is everybody’s game. And with this shared national direction, we’re confident that together, we can build a stronger, more connected and more inspiring future for all Victorians who love the sport.
