Round 3 of the 2024 Championship Women saw some impressive performances from all teams. Not to mention that the Bulleen Boomers were able to keep their winning streak!
McKinnon (71) def Pakenham (69)
McKinnon registered their first win of the year with in a tightly fought battle with Pakenham. The Cougars took a five-point lead into the final term, which extended to 10 points after a Lee Wilkins tip in early in the term. Pakenham then took the ascendancy, scoring 17 of the next 19 points to lead by 5 points with just under 5 minutes remaining. Scores were tied with a minute to go before Hannah McGillen scored to put McKinnon ahead and then A’Lexxus Davis held her nerve to sink two free throws with 13 seconds left on the clock. The 4-point lead was enough for McKinnon to hold on, despite a late score by Haille Nickerson.
A'Lexxus Davis was dominant for McKinnon with 21 points, 16 rebounds and 2 assists. While Haille Nickerson led the way for Pakenham, registering 28 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
Bellarine (89) def Camberwell (53)
Bellarine had a strong win over Camberwell, leaving the Dragons as the only team without a win in 2024. Outscoring Camberwell 52-19 over the second and third quarters, Bellarine were far too good after Camberwell had shown promise in the opening quarter to be with the Storm at the first break.
Leading scorers for Bellarine were Bridgette Rettstatt with 18, Chantelle Hall with 19, and Charlotte Armstrong off the bench with 16. Eleni Valos (18) and Emily Whitehouse (16) were the key contributors for Camberwell.
Bulleen (83) def Sunbury (48)
The undefeated Bulleen took on Sunbury at Boardman Stadium on Saturday night and walked away with an impressive 35-point victory. Keli Romas was excellent for the Boomers, scoring 24 points at 72% from the field. In contrast, Sunbury were hampered by their shooting, registering 24% field goal accuracy and only 55% from the free throw line. Looking ahead to Wyndham next week, this will look to be an area of improvement during the week for the Jets.
Wyndham (115) def Hume City (81)
Wyndham led all night in an excellent hit out against Hume City. A strong defensive display saw Wyndham register 21 points from turnovers, which combined with 70% accuracy from within the arc and 51 points from 3-point range meant they were untroubled throughout the evening. Their 115 points was the highest score of the round, and they will look to take that form into their next game against Sunbury next Saturday at Eagle Stadium.
Amanda Paschal (28 points and 7 assists) and Julie Brosseau (23 points) led the way for Wyndham, whilst Tegan Hindle was excellent for Hume City, with 30 points and 6 assists.
Bulleen (69) def Hume City (59)
Bulleen kept their undefeated status beating the Broncos by 10 in their second game of the round. The boomers came out hard in the first term winning the quarter by 10. Despite the Broncos matching the scoring of the boomers in the next 3 quarters, it was not enough to get them over the line for the win.
Catelyn Van Es was Bulleen’s highest scorer with 22 points along with 12 rebounds. With even scoring across the board for Hume City their highest scorer was Tashia Overby with 19.
Wyndham (81) def McKinnon (64)
Continuing from Saturday night, Wyndham remain undefeated with a win over McKinnon on Sunday. After a competitive first quarter Wyndham held the Cougars to just 9 points in the second quarter. McKinnon tried to chip away in the third winning the third quarter, yet Paschal and her Wyndham unit proved too much, exchanging buckets all too much.
Amanda Paschal was impressive for Wyndham scoring 39. Emily Maltezos added 32 to McKinnon’s tally while going 7/11 from 3-point land.
Warrnambool (63) def Camberwell (58)
Sunday saw a close matchup between the Warrnambool Mermaids and the Camberwell Dragons. With the Mermaids leading by as much as 13 in the first half, the Dragons were able to snatch the lead with a shot by Jade Knight on the half time buzzer. With a close second half, Warrnambool were able to hold out Camberwell to secure the victory.
Camberwell’s highest scorer was Eleni Valos with 15 points along with 8 rebounds. Warrnambool had Dakota Crichton with 6 steals, 16 points and 7 rebounds as well as Julia Nielacna with 17 rebounds.
Pakenham (100) def Sherbrooke (66)
Pakenham set the tone in the first quarter going on a 10-0 run leading into the break finishing on 28 points to Sherbrooke’s 15. Taking out all other 3 quarters, it was the Warriors who seemed too much for the Suns running away with it out scoring the Suns by 14 in the 4th quarter.
Pakenham’s standouts were Haille Nickerson with 24 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and Erica Meyer with 25 points and 8 rebounds. The Suns were led by Alicia Carline who finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
