Round 2 had some close games going down to the wire, teams register their first wins, and some teams are looking to build from their round one victory.
We recap all the round’s highlights from the weekend, as well as make mention of some standout performances.
Warrnambool (75) def. Wyndham (74)
The Mermaids secured their second victory in the championship division, defeating Wyndham by one point.
Whilst the Mermaids controlled the first half, Wyndham battled back in the second. Despite a 21-19 last quarter fight from Wyndham, a three-point basket by Dakota Crichton sealed the victory for the Mermaids.
Wyndham shot the ball well from two-point range and controlled the paint whilst the Mermaids shot at 67% from three. Julia Nielacna top scored for the Mermaids, finishing with 20 points, 20 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Dakota Crichton also played a crucial part in the side’s victory, with 19 points, 14 rebounds and 3 steals.
Amanda Paschal top scored for Wyndham with 28 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.
Pakenham (71) def Camberwell (62)
The Pakenham Warriors secured their first victory for their 2024 campaign, defeating the Dragons by 9 points.
The Warriors controlled the second quarter after a tight first quarter. Whilst the Dragons trailed by 4 at three quarter time, the Warriors won the last quarter, 18-13 to secure the victory. The Warriors had 12-0 fast break in the second quarter, whilst the Warriors also did well points from turnovers, 14-10.
Hallie Nickerson top scored for the Warriors, 22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. Bree Whitman also had a solid contribution, with 11 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block.
Eleni Valos and Georgia Fagon top scored for the Dragons, finishing the game with 18 and 11 points respectively.
Hume City (83) def Sunbury (74)
The Broncos continued their unbeaten start to the season, defeating the Jets by 9 points. Whilst the Jets controlled the middle two quarters, the Broncos won the last quarter, 13-11 to secure the win.
The Broncos went on a 11-3 run in the first quarter, whilst the Jets had a 9-5 run of their own in the second to get back into the game.
Samantha Labros had a huge impact off the bench for the Broncos, finishing with 20 points. Taylor Edwards and Tashia Overby also had a huge role in the side’s victory, finishing with 16 points and 15 points respectively.
Sherbrooke (83) def McKinnon (69)
The Sherbrooke Suns continued their undefeated start to their 2024 campaign, defeating McKinnon by 14 points. Whilst the Cougars controlled the first quarter, the Suns controlled the game from the second quarter onwards, 19-18 to secure the win.
The Suns went on a 13-9 scoring run in the second quarter to set up the comeback, whilst the Suns also controlled the points in the paint.
Alicia Carline was on song in the post for the Suns, finishing with 29 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Miranda Gartner and Tenaya Scooalo also played their roles, finishing with 21 and 16 points respectively.
Shug Dickson and Emily Maltezos top scored for the Cougars, finishing with 26 and 11 points respectively.
Bellarine (86) def Sunbury (57)
The Storm secured their first win of their championship division campaign, defeating the Jets by 29 points.
The Storm controlled all four quarters of the game, 25-15 second and last quarter to secure the victory. Storm shot well from two-point range, whilst controlling the second chance points, 20-4.
Chantelle Hall and Bridgett Rettstatt played a key role in the side’s victory, whilst Courtney Strait also finished with 13 points.
Bulleen (69) def Pakenham (56)
The Bulleen Boomers continued their unbeaten start to their campaign, defeating the Warriors by 13 points. Whilst the Warriors fought back in the second quarter, the Boomers won the third and fourth quarter to secure the win.
The Boomers controlled the second chance points, 17-7 and rebounds, 51-41.
Catelyn Van Es top scored for the Boomers, 15 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal. Maxine Allen and Amy Baum also played their roles, finishing with 11 and 12 points.
Rhiannon Gallagher and Haille Nickerson top scored for the Warriors, finishing with 15 and 14 points.
As we head into Round 3, teams are looking to position establish themselves for the season ahead.
