With round one in the books, the Championship Men’s competition is ready to kick into high gear. The Casey Cavaliers will be the team with the burden of back to back games this week, but will be confident after the opening round performance. In the coming weeks it will become apparent which teams are up for the fight this season and will be battling at the top.
Hawthorn and Blackburn will kick the round off, with Hawthorn entering with a win to their name and Blackburn a loss. Hawthorn overcame Chelsea by eight points behind the scoring of Patrick McBrearty, who scored 26 points including six threes. Blackburn went down by 29 points to Casey in a disappointing performance. Jake Heath was a lone bright spot as he scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Only one other player managed double digit scoring for Blackburn and they will be keen to make amends when they face Hawthorn. However, based on their opening performance, Hawthorn will likely go in as favourites.
Following a big home loss to Hume City, Corio Bay will travel to face Keilor in their second round game. Keilor come into the game having opened up their year with back to back match-ups against McKinnon and Werribee respectively. They lost by just three points to McKinnon before smashing Werribee by 28 the following day. Michael Anderson scored over 20 points and hit four threes in both games. Corio Bay went down by 23 at home in round one, with Joseph Reid Jr leading them in scoring with 31. A major point of concern would be their lack of bench scoring. Lewis Beks scored 19 off the bench, but the other six players combined to go 0-13 from the field. Keilor will back themselves to win, especially playing at home, while Corio Bay will need to find more scoring options to give themselves the best chance of winning.
Hume City will host Chelsea as they look to pick up a second win on the season. The Broncos beat Corio Bay in convincing fashion in the opening round. Jake Martin, Jordan Coleman and Jamal Shabazz, scored 21 points each and combined for 36 rebounds. It was those rebounds that proved to be a key element to their win as they managed 20 second chance points to Corio Bay’s six. Chelsea meanwhile lost their opening game to Hawthorn by a narrow margin. Gulls captain Corey Standerfer was immense despite the loss. He totalled 24 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists to carry his team close to the win. Another side with a lack of bench scoring in their opening game, Chelsea will likely need more than six points from their reserves to get over the line against a free-scoring Hume City side.
Casey will pull double duty this week when they face McKinnon and Werribee. They won their opener against Blackburn thanks to 24 points and 11 rebounds from Raheem Lemons, but with two games in 24 hours, they will need to balance how they play in order to try and be competitive in both fixtures. McKinnon defeated Keilor in round one’s closest match-up, winning by three points. Dillon Stith was the standout with 26 points while Williams Eric added 20. Werribee struggled against Keilor going down by 28 in Keilor’s second game of the weekend. Jacob Formosa scored 22 points on 11 shots, but will need more from his bench in order to be up to the task of getting past Casey.

Looking to respond after last week’s dismantling at the hands of Keilor, Bulleen will play host to Hume City in the opening game of round two. The key for the Boomers will be to avoid turnovers, as they coughed up the ball 35 times last week, allowing the Thunder to score 44 points from these turnovers. Hume City, on the other hand, will be hoping to make it two wins from two games after its heart-stopping victory over the Jets last week. The Boomers will need to pay close attention to Breanna Brock, whose scintillating 31-point performance last week makes her the equal-top scorer in the league.
Two teams desperate to atone for round one losses will face off at Hillview Stadium on Saturday evening, with Southern Peninsula taking on Whittlesea. The Pacers can expect a fired-up Sharks squad coming off a disastrous 3-29 shooting performance from three-point territory. Megan Smith looms as the potential match-winner for Southern Peninsula, with her 22-point, 12-rebound performance in round one leading the way for the Sharks. The Pacers also struggled shooting the ball last week, while allowing the Cougars a 22-5 advantage in points scored from turnovers. Look for the Pacers to take better care of the ball this time around, with Danielle Reinwald (27 points and 21 rebounds last week) and Rachel Bell (24 points and 11 rebounds) leading the way.
A mouth-watering clash looms as Casey, the biggest winners of last week, travel to GESAC to take on fellow round one winners McKinnon. The Cavaliers will be hoping to duplicate their dominant defensive performance of a week ago, when they held the Mermaids to 28 per cent shooting from the field and forced 20 turnovers. The Cougars, however, are no defensive slouches themselves, terrorising the Pacers into a ghastly 34 per cent shooting game in round one. Both teams are also more than capable of lighting up the scoreboard, so expect this to go down to the wire. Equal league-leading scorer Emma Pearce (31 points and 14 rebounds last week) could be the game-breaker for the Cougars.
Taking place at the same time will be a matchup between two 2018 champions, as the Mermaids and the Jets do battle at The Arc Sports Stadium. Both teams will be looking to kick-start their campaigns after disappointing losses last week. The Jets, with a balanced scoring attack led last week by Geralynn Leaupepe (22 points), will like their chances against the newly promoted Mermaids, but after last week’s stinging 39-point loss, Warrnambool will be fighting to make amends.
In the sole Sunday game of round two, Werribee and Keilor will face off in an early-season test for both sides. The Thunder will be hoping for much of the same defensively after holding Bulleen to only 47 points last week, but the Devils have the potential to shoot the ball better than last week’s 35 per cent clip. Something has to give in this game, and the league’s third (Werribee’s Sarah Elsworthy), and fifth (Keilor’s Erin Bollmann) leading scorers will have a large say in how it unfolds.

Collingwood will look to bounce back from a 19-point loss to the Bulleen in round one when they host Shepparton on Saturday night. Conversely, the Gators got their 2019 season off to a flier when they came out of Whittlesea with a big 79-93 away win. Shepparton starters Jerron Jamerson and Javaan Mumtaz will look to keep it rolling after scoring 23 and 22 respectively in R1 against an All Stars defence that allowed 103 points to the Boomers.
Both Keysborough and Western Port will be keen to improve to 2-0 after victories in R1. The Cougars held firm on home court in a thrilling 68-67 victory over Warrnambool, while the Steelers secured an 11-point away win at Bellerine. Keysborough will have been pleased with their perimeter defence, holding the Seahawks to 2/21 shooting from beyond the arc. On the other hand, the Steelers set up their R1 win with 12 made three-pointers, while maintaining focus at the line, making 90% of FT’s as a team.
Warrnambool will be desperate to recover from that devastating one-point defeat at the hands of the Cougars when they welcome Sunbury on Sunday. The Jets will be hoping for more production off the bench, after their second unit produced just seven points in round one. Meanwhile, the Seahawks will need to improve from range if they are to avoid a 0-2 start to the year, after a combined 2/21 three-point shooting performance in R1.
Both Latrobe City and Bellerine will be desperate to avoid slipping to 0-2 when they face off at the Traralgon Sports Stadium. The Energy continued last season’s wilted performance in R1 when they put up just 51 points in a 31-point loss to Warrandyte. Meanwhile the Storm will look to get back to winning ways as they look to get over the disappointment of an opening round home loss.
Warrandyte host Coburg as both sides look to improve to 2-0 after convincing opening week wins. Warrandyte took care of business at home running out 82-51 victors over the Energy, while Coburg look more than suited to life in Division 1 after dismantling Melbourne University 94-66.
The Black Angels will look for their first win of the season when they play host to Bulleen who split their opening weekend back-to-back 1-1, falling to the Jets 69-65 on Sunday after pouring in 103 points in a 19-point dissection of Collingwood on Saturday. Melbourne Uni will want to bounce back after a worrying loss to the newcomers of the competition in R1.
Bellerine play their first back-to-back of 2019 when they host Whittlesea at 2pm on Sunday. Whittlesea will want to avoid two losses from two after falling to Shepparton 79-93 in the opening week.
Bulleen (1-1) and Warrandyte (1-0) will bring R2 to a close on Sunday. The Boomers will play their second back-to-back in as many weeks, while the Venom will also have to turn around from their Saturday night matchup.

Hawthorn Magic host Western Port after a convincing 21-point victory over the Mildura Heat in round one. The Magic were locked in from deep, shooting 42% from three-point range, while also out-rebounding the Heat 60-37. The Steelers on the other hand head into round two 0-1 after falling to the Storm. Turnovers were a major problem for Western Port, committing 21 of them, resulting in 15 opposition points.
Chelsea (1-0) host Craigieburn (0-1) in the second game of the round after piling on 101 points in a 42-point dismantling of Latrobe City in round one. Starters Georgia Stirton and Shaniqua Nilles accounted for 23 and 20 points respectively, while the Gulls’ bench combined for an impressive 41 points. Conversely, Craigieburn struggled to get anything going offensively in round one. The Eagles put up just 47 points in an eight-point home loss to the Camberwell Dragons.
Mildura will look to record their first win of the season when they welcome Camberwell to the Toyota HotHouse at 6pm Saturday. The Heat were easily accounted for by the Magic in round one and shot a measly 26% from the field. They probably won’t find the defence any softer in week two against a Dragons outfit that made D the order of the day in round one, restricting Craigieburn to just 47 points.
Latrobe City will face Bellarine after a lifeless performance in round one, being blown out by 42 points at the hands of the Gulls. The Storm, on the other hand, will look to inflict more pain on the Energy and improve to 2-0, after taking care of business at home last week to beat Western Port 81-73.
Bellarine and Chelsea will face a short turnaround to get up for a midday matchup at the Geelong Arena on Sunday. Both teams head into round two with 1-0 records, and with soft matchups on Saturday both clubs will have ambitions for a 3-0 start to the season.
Warrandyte host Latrobe City to bring round two to a close at 1pm on Sunday. The Venom will look to post their first win of 2019 against an already-vulnerable Energy after they fell to the Dragons last Sunday.

Camberwell head into their round two home matchup with Craigieburn after dismantling the RMIT Redbacks 81-58 in round one. The Dragons will face a Craigieburn Eagles outfit that also find themselves 1-0 heading into round two, after they came out of Mornington with a victory last weekend.
The North East Bushrangers and RMIT Redbacks will both be desperate to snap two-game losing streaks to begin the year after both clubs were handed two defeats in their back-to-back’s last Saturday and Sunday. The sides meet at Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday night in what looms as a potential early-season doomsday for the loser.
Southern Peninsula (1-0) host the Maccabi Warriors at Hillview Stadium at 7.30pm on Saturday after accounting for Altona in R1. The Warriors will need to bounce back from their 27-point defeat at the hands of Pakenham that saw them obliterated on the glass, out-rebounded 58-26.
The Sherbrooke Suns and Altona Gators both head into their Saturday night matchup 0-1. The Suns will need to improve on last week’s 35% shooting effort, while Altona will be desperate to get a win on the board in order to avoid heading into the Sunday of their back-to-back 0-2.
Wallan face Melton in round two after both sides came away from round one with wins. Wallan’s Jaak Ponsford helped the Panthers to an 81-90 away victory over the Redbacks on Sunday courtesy of his 18 points off the bench on 7/8 shooting. For the Thoroughbreds, it was starter Chris Johnson with 22 on 6/9 field goals leading his side to an 87-75 homecourt win against the Bushrangers.
The Mildura Heat face Mornington at home on Saturday night. The Heat will look to turn the HotHouse into a fortress after knocking off Sherbrooke at home in round one. They face a Breakers outfit that didn’t give a yelp in their week one dismantling at the hands of Craigieburn.
The Eagles play their second game of the weekend when they host Pakenham at 2pm on Sunday. Pakenham make the trip to Craigieburn following a straightforward 97-70 win over Maccabi in round one in which all ten players on the Warriors’ roster saw between 16-24 minutes of court time, with six players scoring in double figures.
Altona (0-1) and Wallan (1-0) meet on Sunday, with both sides playing their second game of a back-to-back. The two clubs meet at Altona Sports Centre at 3pm.

Both the North East Bushrangers and Coburg Giants will be looking to bounce back from disappointing round one losses when they meet at Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday afternoon. The Bushrangers will need to drastically improve their shooting from week one, after they shot a combined 24% from the floor in their 78-44 defeat at the hands of Melton. Tenille Collins was the only bright spot in the loss, with 16 points. Coburg copped a 12 point home loss to Melbourne University, as they were smashed on glass. The Black Angels out-rebounded the Giants 54-37, resulting in 21 more second chance points.
Melton make the trip to RB Robson Stadium to face Wallan at 6pm on Saturday. The two clubs had vastly different round one results, with the Thoroughbreds coasting to a 34-point victory over the Bushrangers, while the Panthers were taken to task by Sherbrooke to lose 89-62. It will take a big effort for Wallan to reverse R1’s form.
Melbourne University host Sherbrooke in round two after both sides had convincing wins in the first week of basketball. The Black Angels won away at Coburg by 12 points, courtesy of Amelia Smiths 30 points. Smith did a great job of getting to the line and converting, going 14/16 on free throws. It was the Suns’ starting five that did the damage in their round one win, with the starting unit combining for 75 points. The matchup could set the scene for a duel between Smith and Sherbrooke’s Rebecca Jones, who dropped 25 in week one.
The Warriors host the Breakers at 8pm on Saturday night. Both sides came away with wins in round one, with Pakenham running out 15-point victors over the All Stars while Mornington scraped their way to a one-point, nailbiting defensive win over Blackburn, 45-44. The Warriors will want to cut down on turnovers in round two, committing 23 against Collingwood.
Blackburn and Collinwood round out week two’s matchups, with the All Stars travelling to Mullum Mullum Stadium on Saturday night.
