The Nation’s best club teams converged on Melbourne for the prestigious, invitation-only, 3-day event, conducted annually by Basketball Victoria. Despite some very tough opposition from the bigger basketball clubs (and some strong interstate teams), Hawthorn Magic won the Bronze Medal in the Under 12 Girls competition plus a highly regarded fourth place in the Under 12 Boys age group – unofficially ranking those teams among the top three in the State.
“This fantastic result reflects the emphasis that Hawthorn Junior Magic places on the younger age groups to ensure the success of the Club going forward and the sport of basketball generally”, said Michael Penman, Chairman of Hawthorn Junior Magic. “We have invested in a very strong Junior Player Development program at Hawthorn which is clearly showing dividends,” he added.
VJBL Competition Manager, Rebekah Lacy said, “A highlight of the weekend was the overall performance of the Victorian teams with Victorian Representatives winning every age group bar one.” A total of 110 teams participated in the Classic (in the Under 12 to Under 18 age groups) with 34 being from interstate.
She also noted that: “It was very pleasing to see some of the smaller clubs perform so well on the big stage against some of the larger associations who traditionally dominate these events”
