The Greater Shepparton Basketball Association (GSBA) recently took time out from their day-to-day operations to recognise the hard work and dedication that their members have shown through many years of service to the association. They celebrated with the inaugural Life Members Presentation Gala, which they plan on continuing annually to honour their members.
The night consisted of acknowledging 27 previously awarded Life Memberships, with updated awards, plus eight new inductees for 2022.
The new inductees were:
- Sisters Kylie Doyle and Jackie Marshall
- Ian McDonald
- Peter Sutherland
- Michelle Judd
- Bruce and Laurell Bartlett
A highlight of the night was a trip down memory lane with Noel Browne, a well-known, local basketball identity. He highlighted the characters of the club, from referees, players and coaches who have all played a part in creating an association that supports local players from all levels.
David Huxtable, Basketball Victoria’s General Manager - Member and Community Services, attended the gala dinner to present some awards, he said it was a great opportunity to acknowledge selfless commitment from some local heroes.
“It was a great night to celebrate the achievements of the members of GSBA. The dedicated volunteers ensure the association keeps growing to support the local basketball community.”
The GSBA’s current President, Peter Sutherland acknowledges that it is the amazing volunteers who have helped to keep the association functioning through some tough times, they have helped to sustain the association and keep it operating.
“Basketball has been very good to these people, but more importantly these people have been good to basketball. They’ve given endless hours of their time, passion, and meritorious service to the association over many years and have been deemed by their peers to be worthy of the highest honour and shall receive all rights and privileges as determined by the association.”
After many years of struggle and a wide range of hurdles, the association can see a light at the end of the tunnel. The association, Basketball Victoria and the local Shepparton Council are working together to ensure the facilities can support the association through infrastructure development as a result of the growing popularity of the sport.
