The world of basketball has lost a true pioneer with the passing of Adam McKay. Adam passed away on April 17 after a short battle with stage 4 brain cancer. Adam used basketball as a vehicle to break down barriers, foster inclusivity, and create meaningful change. His legacy, deeply rooted in advocacy and empowerment, continues to inspire countless individuals.
One of Adam’s remarkable contributions was the founding of Helping Hoops, a charity organisation that has revolutionised access to basketball for children and young people in communities across Melbourne. His vision was simple yet powerful: break down barriers and give everyone equal access to this great game we all love. Provide children and young people with opportunities to participate in after-school activities and develop life skills and instil values that benefit participants well beyond the on-court activity.
Basketball Victoria has seen first-hand the positive outcomes created across Melbourne by Adam and the Helping Hoops team as they support and encourage the city’s underprivileged, all-abilities and migrant communities.
Helping Hoops and Adam’s vision continues today, running free basketball programs for over 1000 children, across 11 locations, impacting countless lives through the joy of hoops.
We have been a proud supporter of Adam’s vision and this amazing organisation he created here in Melbourne. His work has made such an extraordinary difference to the lives of so many disadvantaged Melburnians, and we will continue to work with the team at Helping Hoops to carry on the legacy he has left behind.
Basketball Victoria and the broader basketball community are mourning the loss of incredible individual, taken too early. Our thoughts are with Adam’s family and friends at this time.
Vale Adam. (1981-2024)
