National Junior Classic
Every year during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, Basketball Victoria invites elite Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 teams from across Victoria and Australia to compete in the National Junior Classic tournament.
The best 128 teams (both boys and girls) from across Australia compete in the tournament, with teams from Victoria, New South Wales, ACT, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and New Zealand all able to nominate and qualify.
Teams are selected based on their ability to compete within the tournament and based on previous tournament or competition results within the team’s home state.
A maximum of 8 interstate teams are selected to compete in the Classic. If teams nominate from the Northern Territory, Queensland, Tasmania or Western Australia, only one team will be accepted. This team must be in the top two of their current competition at the time of selection.
Should an overseas team(s) express an interest in participating in the tournament then if their entry is accepted then the interstate quota will be reduced by that number.
Victorian teams are ranked on their performance in the VJBL, with the top 4 teams in each VC pool, at the end of Round 9 qualifying for the event. Past results or a challenge game are used to break any teams tied on their records up to then in the season.
There will be one place allocated to the Country Championship winner subject to the following Country qualifying criteria:
