BASKETBALL DEVELOPMENT
Basketball Victoria is dedicated to the continual growth of our athletes and coaches through clinics, camps, education and resources.
We provide a clear and defined pathway for our athletes, coaches and officials through the sport from grassroots level, to international competition.
The Basketball Pathway
1. Participation/ Introductory Programs
Basketball Victoria runs the McDonald’s Skill, Fun and Play and McDonald’s Hoop Time programs for primary schools at local stadiums. Aussie Hoops is run in conjunction with affiliated associations.
2. Domestic Basketball Competitions
Local basketball associations and stadiums run domestic basketball competitions around the state. These competitions cater for the under 8-19 junior age groups, as well as adults.
3. Representative Competitions
Talented basketball players are selected by associations to play in representative teams. The Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) caters for players up to the under 20 age group and there are various open age representative leagues, such as Big V and MMBL.
4. National Intensive Training Program (NITP)
Outstanding basketball players aged 14 – 17 are selected from a series of identification camps to participate in the NITP Program run by Basketball Victoria.
5. National Junior Championships
Basketball Australia hosts annual National Championships in junior age groups. Basketball Victoria sends representative teams to these championships.
6. World Junior Championships
Basketball Australia sends junior national teams to represent Australia every two years at World Junior Championships.
7. National Leagues
Elite players also compete in the National Basketball League (NBL), Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) and the Australian Basketball League (ABA)
8. International Tournaments
At the highest level, Basketball Australia teams compete in World Championships, Olympic Games and other international events.
