September Coaching Clinics Wrap Up

September 2014 has been a busy month for growing the game in Victoria with three outstanding coach's presentations during the month.

It all started off with a clinic from Eastern Washington University Head Coach, Jim Hayford. Coach Hayford has two Victorians on his current roster already in Venky Jois (Dandenong Rangers), and Felix von Hofe (Melbourne Tigers), and took our coaches through an hour and a half of his Full Court Attack Offence. With over 80 local coaches in attendance, it was a great informative night for all involved. A special thanks to the Victoria Metro U18 NITP girls, and the Box Hill Senior Secondary College girls who were demonstrators on court for the night.

On what was one of the rare Friday nights free on the VJBL calendar, over 100 coaches packed into the meeting room at the State Basketball Centre to learn from Australian U17 Men's Assistant Coach, and Victoria Country High Performance Coach Justin Schueller about the trends from the recent U17 World Championships, where our Mens team finished 2nd to the powerful United States team.

Capping off the night was NBA legend and Grand Canyon University Head Coach Dan Majerle. Coach Majerle already has three Australians on his roster, including Matthew Jackson (Diamond Valley Eagles). Coach Majerle went through his Offensive Transition and Set Plays, before going over shooting technique, and taking questions from the captivated audience. It was a long, but highly informative night for all coaches in attendance. Special thanks to the Victoria Metro U16 NITP girls who were demonstrators for the night.

DVD’s of all clinics are available for coaches to purchase through the Basketball Victoria e-shop.

Basketball Victoria regularly hosts a number of Coaching Clinics throughout each year.

Presenters of Basketball Victoria clinics include current Australian Boomers Coach and San Antonio Spurs Assistant Brett Brown, former Australian Coaches Brian Goorjian and Tom Maher and Olympians and Australian Basketball icons Lindsay Gaze and Michele Timms. Clinics have also featured coaches from the US College System and Europe.

Every coaching clinic is different and aims to provide something new for every level of coach, from primary school and domestic coaches, right through to our national level senior and junior coaches. Some coaches have been surprised to have a WNBL coach sit next to them or have a former Australian coach sitting behind them. These clinics really do provide a learning experience for everyone! It is an opportunity to watch an experienced coach in action, take notes and later implement it with your own group.

Basketball Victoria also provides ‘Community Coaching Clinics’. These are targeted towards our coaches of junior levels and those who are new to the coaching and specifically, the basketball scene. Coaches have the opportunity to watch an experienced junior coach take a group of young players through basic fundamentals, drills and philosophy of the game in a three hour clinic.
