WNBL Titans Clash at the Cage
The WNBL announced today that the Round 18 game between Lauren Jackson’s Canberra Capitals and the Global Metals Bulleen Boomers will now be played on Saturday 13 February at 1.00pm, at the 3,500 thousand seat capacity State Netball and Hockey Centre, ‘The Cage’ in Melbourne.
The change was made due to the overwhelming public interest in seeing Jackson, the world’s best female basketball player, take on the league’s number one team the Boomers, led by undoubtedly the best the young star in the game, Liz Cambage.
The 203cm eighteen-year-old Cambage will go head to head with Jackson for the first time in her young career.
“Of course it’s going to be a big challenge.” Cambage admitted. “She brings the whole package as the number one player in the world. I’m fairly nervous, but excited at the same time. It’s going to be a fair challenge!”
Jackson has led her team to four straight victories since she rejoined the WNBL late into the Capitals 2009/10 campaign, averaging 26 points per game, and improving with every outing.
The game, which was originally slated to be played the evening prior at the usual home of the Boomers, The Veneto Club, has become the most anticipated showdown of the WNBL season.
Cambage believes the potency of the Canberra side from top to bottom is similar to her side Bulleen.
“You look at the [Canberra] point guards, the middles, the bigs, and they can do everything. I think we are both strong in every position, so it will be a good game to watch.”
It has also been announced that the game will be carried live to air on ABC TV in order to give interested onlookers outside of Melbourne a chance to catch all the action.
The clash between the two WNBL powerhouses will be supported by ‘Go For Your Life’, a Victorian Government initiative which aims to promote
- Increasing levels of physical activity
- Improving eating habits
- Getting involved with neighbourhood and local community activities.
Cambage says it will be good to unearth some new Boomers fans amongst those that come to the game to see Jackson.
“She brings that influence with her and gets the crowds back out to watch. That’s why we have to move it of course, because ‘The Ven’ won’t be able to hold everyone who wants to come.”
